In the pursuit of comprehensive urban understanding, passive observation is no longer sufficient. Active urban sensing, characterized by deliberate initiatives to organize equipment and personnel for data collection, emerges as a crucial paradigm in urban studies. This special issue is dedicated to exploring the transformative potential of active urban sensing, delineating new directions that promise to revolutionize our understanding of cities and inform more proactive urban interventions.


Passive data collection methods often yield fragmented insights into urban dynamics. In contrast, active urban sensing empowers researchers to orchestrate deliberate data collection efforts tailored to specific research objectives. This special issue seeks to highlight the transformative impact of proactive urban sensing initiatives, showcasing how they enable researchers to gather comprehensive and contextualized data sets that capture the multifaceted complexities of urban life. By embracing active sensing approaches, we aim to unlock new avenues for understanding urban dynamics and informing evidence-based decision-making in urban planning and management.

Advancements in technology have democratized the process of urban data collection, enabling citizens to actively participate in sensing initiatives. This special issue explores the convergence of technology and citizen engagement in fostering active urban sensing networks. By leveraging crowdsourcing platforms, mobile applications, and citizen science initiatives, researchers can harness the collective intelligence of communities to augment traditional sensing methodologies. [ The scope of Topics(主题范围) ]

With this background, we are excited to introduce this special issue on “Empowering Cities through Active Sensing Initiatives”. Being in line with the scope of this journal, it emphasizes the transformative potential of active urban sensing in enhancing our understanding of urban dynamics, fostering community engagement, and driving innovation in urban research and practice.


Submitted articles should be in the form of an article and are required to be written in English. Please refer strictly to the journal’s requirements for an “article”. The contributions may include but are not limited to the following topics:


基于此背景,我们很高兴推出本期专刊“通过主动感知 赋能 城市”。与本期刊的范围一致,本期专刊强调了主动城市感知在增强我们对城市动态的理解、促进社区参与以及推动城市研究和实践创新方面的变革潜力。


提交的文章应以文章形式呈现,且必须用英文撰写。请严格遵守期刊对“文章”的要求。投稿内容可以包括但不限于以下主题:


  1. Mob ile Sensing for Urban Dynamics: Exploring the utilization of mobile sensing technologies, such as cameras, meteorological stations and other sensors, to capture real-time urban dynamics, mobility patterns, and spatial behaviors.

  2. Coupling Mobile and Stationary Sensing Approaches: Investigating the synergies between mobile and stationary sensing methodologies and examining how their integration enhances the granularity and reliability of urban data collection.

  3. Advancements in Sensor Technologies: Assessing recent advancements in sensor technologies, including IoT devices, drones, and their applications in urban sensing initiatives.

  4. Optimization of Data Collection Pathways: Analyzing strategies for optimizing data collection pathways, including sensor deployment strategies, sampling techniques, and data aggregation methods, to maximize the efficiency.

  5. Scaling Up Active Sensing Initiatives: Discussing strategies for scaling up active sensing initiatives from pilot projects to city-wide deployments, including challenges related to infrastructure, funding, governance, and stakeholder engagement, and identifying best practices for sustainable and scalable urban sensing solutions.

  6. Urban Planning Practice: Examining the integration of active sensing technologies and data-driven approaches into urban planning and design practices, including case studies of successful implementations and lessons learned.


[ Guidelines(投稿指南) ]

Submissions should be prepared according to the “Submission Guidelines” available on the journal homepage https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/transactions-in-urban-data-science-and-technology/journal203731#submission-guidelines . Please visit the Journal’s submission site https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tus to upload your manuscript. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor been currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion into the special issue, it is important to select “Empowering Cities through Active Sensing Initiatives” when you reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process and indicate the special issue in your cover letter.


Abstracts for papers should contain the following information: name and affiliation of the authors, the title, and an abstract description (max. 200 words). The authors are recommended to send their abstract to the guest editor Ying Long at [email protected] . After the abstract is approved by the guest editors, the authors are invited to submit a full paper, which will then go through a peer-review process. Please note that the papers can be submitted any time before the deadline. The authors can also directly submit the full paper in the journal’s submission system, without contact in advance with the guest editor.
