熟词生义

freak

看剧的时候会遇到“ freak out ”这种表达，指： If someone freaks out, or if something freaks them out, they suddenly feel extremely surprised, upset, angry, or confused.（ 使）产生强烈反应；（使）心烦意乱；（使）吓得要死 。

pony

本指a small horse 小马，《小马宝莉》的英文就是My Little Pony。

在Cockney中它作俚语可以指 25英镑。 monkey 指 500英镑。

cabbage

binge

又遇到这个词啦，倒也不是熟词生义，权当复习一下啦。它既可以作名词也可以作动词，指：（短时间内的） 无节制；放纵 。

综英里出现过 Internet binge , 就指无节制的上网。

除了单独使用，我们还可以把它和其它的动词连起来构成一个词，比如：

① binge-watch 追剧，尤其指一下子看完好多集那种追剧（小丑竟是我自己？）

② binge-drink 酗酒

另外， spree 这个名词也可以作为binge的近义词。在新闻中我们还会看到shooting spree这种表达，比如CNN的报道：

The massacre in Colorado, which comes less than a week after eight people were killed in a shooting spree at three Atlanta-area spas, has stoked fear and confusion.

这里的shooting spree就可以理解为在短时间内枪杀了很多人。

grass up

这里grass作 动词 ，grass up指：

to tell someone in authority, especially the police, about something bad that someone else has done （向警方）告密 。

还记得吗，在综英里我们也学过一个相同意思的短语— tip off， 作者说她开学第一天就走错了教室，去了一个上生物课的教室，就说墙边瓶子里装着的蛇本应该暗示她这是生物教室的：

The bottled snakes along the wall should have tipped me off .

以及我们遇到过的 tell on 表示“ 打小报告 ”，这倒不一定是向警察叔叔告状了。

生动习语

be not much to look at

这个表达就相当于一个euphemism来形容别人长得并不是那么好看，或者就是字幕组说的“ 容貌平平 ”。

为了避免伤害到别人，肯定不能用ugly咯！可以说：

①Someone has a lovely personality.

避开长相谈性格，实在是高！

②Someone did not win the genetic lottery.

哎，还是基因问题呀...

③或者直接用形容词 homely , plain 。

但是学习归学习，无论如何，我们都不应该在公开场合随便评论别人的长相！
