今天我们要学习的是to hold water
To hold water 按字面解释当然可以说是"不让水漏出来"。但是，它的另外一个意思是指某一个人找的借口、提出的理由、或说的话是确实的，站得住脚的。美国人经常说："That excuse simply doesn't hold water."意思是：那个借口根本站不住脚。我们来举个例子：
例句-1："The accused man claimed that he'd been in another city the night of the murder. But his story didn't hold water after three different witnesses testified in court that they had seen him running from the scene of the crime."
这句话的意思是："这个被控告的人说，发生谋杀案的那天晚上他出门去了，不在当地。但是，有三个不同的证人都出庭作证说，他们看见他从作案的地点逃跑。因此，他说出事那天他不在当地的说法根本是靠不住的。"
例句-2：
“What he told us simply doesn't hold water at all, for that many friends he has, why he would has no one to ask for a helping hand from to borrow that amount of money, besides, I heard that he asks most of people around him for small loan from time to time.”
意思是：''他说的话根本站不住脚，他那么多朋友，怎么会找不到人借那么点钱,另外，我听说他时不时都会这样问周围的人借点小钱的.”

From my personal experience, English is a language that requires a strong sense of logic to illustrate oneself, the most efficient way is to try reasoning with native speakers on explaining or arguing certain academic problems to check if what we say could hold water or not, that would definitely improve our utterances dramatically.
根据我个人经验，英语是一个需要很强的逻辑来表达自己的语言，最有效的方法是尝试和英语国家的人解释或辩论一些学术问题，看看自己说的话能不能站住脚，那样可以很快地提高我们的表达能力。
2.What kinds of excuses you usually use when you are late for something?
你迟到一般会用什么借口的？
For What I’ve learn, No excuse is the best excuse, for no matter how well-rounded our excuses are made-up, people would just take it as some cover we played around.Especially those cliche one like:“I spent 10mins on help an old lady cross the street and escorted her home”.It’s simple doesn’t hold water at all.
我看来，不给借口是最好的借口，不管我们的借口说的多么好，对方一般都会认为是我们不够谨慎的掩饰。特别是那些陈词滥调好像：“我花了10分钟扶了个老奶奶过马路，跟着将天她送回家了。”根本很难让人相信的。
