Laugh, and the world laughs with you;

Weep, and you weep alone.

For the sad old earth must borrow it s mirth,

But has trouble enough of its own.

Sing, and the hills will answer;

Sigh, it is lost on the air.

The echoes bound to a joyful sound,

But shrink from voicing care.

你哭，却只能一个人哭。

Rejoice, and men will seek you;

Grieve, and they turn and go.

They want full measure of all your pleasure,

But they do not need your woe.

Be glad, and your friends are many;

Be sad, and you lose them all.

There are none to decline your nectared wine,

But alone you must drink life s gall.

你高兴，人们会与你相随；

你悲伤，人们便转身离去。

人们愿意分享你所有的喜悦，

但不需要你的痛苦。

Feast, and your halls are crowded;

Fast, and the world goes by.

Succeed and give, and it helps you live,

But no man can help you die.

There is room in the halls of pleasure

For a long and lordly train,

But one by one we must all file on

Through the narrow aisles of pain.

埃拉·惠勒·威尔科克斯（Ella Wheeler Wilcox，1850-1919）是十九世纪美国著名作家和诗人。对于中国读者来说，她的声名虽不如沃尔特.惠特曼（Walter Whitman）那般卓著，但却当之无愧成为她那个时代最受欢迎的诗人。她的诗平实质朴、清新自然、韵律精美、意境遂远，意想典雅而纤丽，被许多报刊杂志书籍争相刊登，也受到无数诗歌爱好者的喜爱，其中有13首作品被选入 《最受喜爱美国诗歌选集》，而《孤独》则被读者评选为最难忘的诗歌之一。
