TheLetter
Takahashi Mutsuo
(JPN)
I am writing a letter
addressed to you.
But
as I write,
you who will read the letter
don’t exist yet;
and when you read the letter,
I who wrote it
won’t exist anymore.
A letter suspended
between someone who doesn’t existyet
and someone who doesn’t existanymore -
does it really exist?
I am reading a letter
written by you who don’t existanymore,
and addressed to me who didn’t existyet.
Your handwriting wraps me up
in rosy happiness
or
plunges me in violet despair.
You who wrote the letter
are a light-source that ceased withthe letter.
And I, reading the letter today,
am an eye that didn’t exist backthen.
The essence of a letter between
a non-existent light-source
and a non-existent eye
is light transmitted throughdarkness
from one non-existent sphere
to another—
but does it really exist?
He will read your letter.
He who didn’t exist before,
and doesn’t now,
but who belongs instead to a far-offtime.
And as he read the letter
from you who don’t exist anymore butdid,
the letter you wrote to me whodidn’t exist then
but do now,
he will catch a reflection of rosyhappiness
or
be eclipsed by violet despair.
Light emitted
from someone who doesn’t exist
to someone who didn’t yet,
and viewed by someone else again whodoesn’t
yet exist,
that is to say, light emitted fromnothing to nothing,
refracted and forwarded to yetanother nothing,
the nothingness that the light beamsacross -
does any of it really exist?
