Cognitive deficits and behavioral symptoms (e.g., hallucinations, depression, apathy, agitation, and sleep disturbances) are reported in patients with pre-symptomatic AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia due to Alzheimer’s (AD), Parkinson’s (PD), Lewy Body (LB) and other neurodegenerative diseases in relation to brain neuropathology measured in-vivo and using structural, molecular, and functional neuroimaging. In this regard, it is poorly known how this neuropathology affects neurophysiological brainstem ascending activating systems and thalamocortical-corticothalamic loops regulating sleep-wake cycle, vigilance, mood, and cognitive processes. This is a serious gap in the disease models as cognition and behavior are expected to be more strictly related to neurophysiological abnormalities than accumulation of toxic protein or atrophy in the brain. To fill this gap, recent studies have successfully used electroencephalographic (EEG) techniques. However, there is no consensus on a unifying clinical neurophysiological model of these diseases.

For the present Special Issue, we call for original papers reporting EEG findings obtained in seniors with AD, PD, LB and/or other neurodegenerative dementing diseases at the stages from the intact cognition to dementia. The papers are expected to expand our neurophysiological understanding of patients’ dysfunctions in vigilance, cognition, and behavior. The papers of interest may use quantitative EEG techniques including the analysis of (1) resting state EEG rhythms by linear or nonlinear procedures, (2) evoked potentials, (3) event-related potentials (ERPs), and event-related EEG oscillations (EROs). Of special interest are studies including fluid or neuroimaging disease biomarkers or those using neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic or electric stimulation and pharmacological agents.

Case studies, such as Wernicke’s patient Susanne Adam, Broca’s patient Louis Victor Leborgne, H.M., and Phineas Gage provided the foundation of research in cognition and neuroscience. A special field in this line of work involves research into small cohorts of rare disorders, e.g. acquired prosopagnosia, congenital sensory and motor deficits, and extreme neurosurgical procedures. Together, they have allowed for great strides in our current understanding of development and brain organization.
