This is a physically challenging exhibition. It occupies 17 exhibition halls of the National Art Museum of China.

On show are more than 550 artworks on loan from a dozen of museums, institutions and families of featured artists across the country.

And the theme is to mark one single province's contribution to the modernization of Chinese art in the 20th century.
Covering nearly one fourth of China's mainland coastline, Guangdong has been in the forefront of external exchanges and social transformations over the past century.

You may not know that it is also the cradle of many top modern artists, whose outputs have become classics and are still influencing our tastes.
Many shown artists at Mission of Reform are the country's first- and second-generation reformers, who studied in Europe or Japan and who, after they returned home, renewed the landscape of Chinese art by infusing the techniques and styles of other cultures.

Among them there were representatives of Lingnan School of Painting. Guangdong produced China's earliest home-grown oil painters who learned from foreigners, as Guangdong for a certain period of time was their major gateway to the country's hinderland.
Pioneers of the Lingnan school introduced oil techniques to enliven the ink-brush tradition, such as Gao Jianfu (1879-1951), one of the school's founders.
Gao studied at the 130-year-old Tokyo Fine Arts School, now Tokyo University of the Arts. He participated in the Xinhai Revolution. With the support of Sun Yat-sen, he was devoted to the dissemination of revolutionary ideas and art education among the public.
Tokyo Fine Arts School cultivated several Chinese modern artists, such as Li Shutong, and Li Xiongcai (1910-2001), another Lingnan school painter.
This painting,
Patrol in Forest
, is one brilliant work in Li's oeuvre. It looks small here. Do see it at the museum, if you're in Beijing.
Li is a genius of showing the misty, cloudy beauty of natural scenery.
This painting is one of my favorites at the exhibition. Yu Ben (1905-1995) executed this work to express the sufferings of those struggling at the bottom, like he once experienced.
One of the Chinese immigrants in Canada, Yu had been a child labor before he made enough money to study painting at school.
There are also outstanding woman artists, the goddesses not only of their time, but also their talent and courage still deserve our admiration.
They are legends because they coped with chaos and wars and also, because when they pursued a career, they had to stand up to the restrictions that were posed to females, which one could hardly imagine these days.
He Xiangning (1878-1972) is more remembered as a renowned social activist and wife of senior statesman Liao Zhongkai. Well, she is a well-trained and learned painter and poet in her own right.
Guan Zilan (1903-1985) was one of the most talented woman painters in the 1930s and 40s.
