Stern 是本周《经济学人》（2024年1月18日刊）标题为“Donald Trump will upend 80 years of American foreign policy”一文中出现的一个单词：

从词源上来看， stern 一词源自古英语 styrne （严厉的、严酷的、严肃的；严格的、残忍的；不灵活的、僵硬的），最早于12世纪出现在英语中，主要用来表示“严厉的、严格的、苛刻的、苛求的”，侧重指人或其言行举止严肃、僵硬且无情，尤其是在维护权威、执行纪律或要求别人服从时。比如：

严厉的面容/表情/注视

从这个概念出发， stern 便被用来拓展指工作、考验、竞争、反对等“严峻的、棘手的、难对付的”，常意味着无法逃避或回避，或者说外表上严酷且令人望而生畏。比如：
