Dr. Boarhead’s Summary of Global Updates on the 2019 Novel Coronavirus: 24th January 2021

1. Journal of the American Medical Association : In a diagnostic study including 809 participants evaluated prior to reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction testing for SARS-CoV-2, 35% of 58 participants with confirmed COVID-19 reported olfactory dysfunction, gustatory dysfunction, or both, in comparison with only 4% of 751 without COVID-19. <7 Jan.>

2. Science : An analysis of immunological and epidemiological data on endemic human coronaviruses shows that infection-blocking immunity wanes rapidly, but disease-reducing immunity is long-lived. It suggests that once the endemic phase is reached, SARS-CoV-2 may be no more virulent than the common cold. However, a different outcome is predicted for babies and young children. <12 Jan.>

3. CBS: Norway said no link had been established between the vaccine candidate BNT162b2 and any post-vaccination death in the country, but it recommended doctors consider the overall health of the frailest before giving them the shot. Since the start of the vaccination campaign in late Dec. 2020, the country has registered 33 deaths among elderly people who have received their first dose. <13 Jan.>

4. Nature : The laboratory origin stories have taken on a new life recently, which relies on the fact that SARS-CoV-2 was engineered for gain-of-function studies. However, gain-of-function research is subject to intense scrutiny because of its high risk. It is extremely unlikely that gain-of-function research on hard-to-obtain coronaviruses could occur under the radar. Moreover, there is an extensive history of pathogen emergence by natural means: most novel viral pathogens that have caused epidemics in the human population have emerged naturally from a wildlife reservoir. <13 Jan.>

5. Wall Street Journal : Israel’s largest healthcare provider compared test positivity rates among 200,000 people over 60 who received BNT162b2 with 200,000 that did not. Until day 14, there was little difference between the two groups. But after that, the data showed a 33% fall in infection rates among those who had been vaccinated compared with those who had not. <14 Jan.>

6. Journal of the American Medical Association : In a primary analysis, the saliva nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) pooled sensitivity was 83.2%, and the pooled specificity was 99.2%. The nasopharyngeal swab NAAT had a sensitivity of 84.8% and a specificity of 98.9%. Results were similar in secondary analyses. <15 Jan.>

[key info] The accuracy of saliva NAAT is similar to that of nasopharyngeal swab NAAT.
