On Aug 26, British commercial television network Channel 5 broadcast a program featuring people's emotional and behavioral reactions to solitary confinement for five days straight.
The program, In Solitary, saw four volunteers locked in separates room full of cameras, but with no access to the outside world — no phones, internet or any human contact whatsoever. All they got were a bed, toilet, food and drink, and a whiteboard.
They were also allowed to bring along three items of their own choosing.
Some brought letters from their husbands, while others chose packs of playing cards. Art equipment, pens, and heart-shaped stones were also among the items chosen.
Three out of the four people made it to the end of the experiment. All of them described it as an ordeal.
When asked what raised their spirits when they felt at their lowest, many pointed to the items they had brought with them. These objects helped them pass the time, but more importantly, they brought back precious memories or thoughts of their loved ones that motivated them to keep fighting.
How about you? Are there any people or objects that could encourage you to keep going forward even when you feel desperately lonely?
