The most important and the most frequently asked question during any interview is:
Tell me about yourself/Introduce yourself.
And there are many different ways for you to answer this question. But the WORST answer you could give is: “Well, what do you want to know about me?”
This shows that you haven’t properly worked for this interview.
Before I start talking about the introduction itself, there are
2 ground rules
(基本原则) that you have to keep in mind:
1. Do NOT talk about your personal life.
Keep this in mind that the interviewer doesn’t wanna know about your hobbies, your family, or even your favorite TV show. The biggest mistake for any rookie interviewee is to think that the interviewers want to know about your personal life.
They are not interested in you personally. They actually want to know about your qualifications, skills and experiences. They just wanna know your professional background.
2. Learn to tell stories.
You don’t wanna tell them your life stories. You wanna tell them your professional/work stories.
Try not to use any big words.
Tell your previous experiences in the most simple and concise(准确) way possible.
The interviewers will be able to tell whether you are telling the truth or you’re making things up.
Also try to avoid empty and bland descriptions like: I work very hard/I am careful when I’m solving problems/My co-workers really like working with me… These are meaningless.
You need to tell real examples, stores that are engaging, clear and complete.
So what are the major points or attributes that do interest the interviewers. What answers do you desperately need to showcase in your 3 minute introduction?
-
Are you a good fit for the job?
你是不是合适人选?
-
Whether or not you’ll be able to fit in the team or the culture of the company?
你是否能融入公司队伍?
-
What you have accomplished in your past?
你过去做过什么?
-
How will your skills and traits help their organization?
你的什么技能最能够为公司提供帮助?
TIPS :
-
Don’t read your resume line by line. The interviewers CAN read themselves, and there’s a big chance that they have already skimmed through your resume prior to your speech.
-
Keep your answers brief and concise. Keep your introduction around 2-3 minutes.
-
You also wanna make sure that you show that you know a lot about the company, about the job description, and about the role that you’re applying for.
Maybe do a quick Google search of the company. It’s culture, its clients, its major tasks, its recent news, etc.
There are
5 major sections
that you need to include in your introduction. Let’s break it down:
1. Education & Experience
School/major/project/paper
Company name/title/years of that role/responsibilities & duties
2. Most important accomplishments
Focus on one major accomplishment. Explain it in depth and in detail.
3. How much you know about this company and the role
Do lots of research. Get to know the role and the business
This not only shows that you know about yourself, your skills and experiences etc. You also know about the company’s needs as well.
This creates a connection between you and the organization.
4. Your drive & energy & motivation
Through your talking speed/tone/body language… Sometimes how you say things is even more important than what you say. First impression is KEY!
5. How will you add value and be a good fit for your team/organization
Why you are the one and only fit.
