We’ve released our worldwide Global Travel Trends 2020 Report based on global traveller search and booking data from over 100 million Skyscanner users every month to reveal more about today’s travellers and where they’re going in the future.

The report reveals the small Caribbean island of St Maarten, the African nation of Congo and Asia’s Azerbaijan as seeing a huge surge in interest in the Emerging Destinations list. While the USA, Spain and Japan are in the top three Popular Destinations for travellers globally. The report also highlights aviation trends such as a growing awareness of sustainable flight choices and an increase in searches for Premium Economy for long haul flights.

The most notable increases in interest show travellers are seeking the road less travelled. Skyscanner’s list of Emerging Destinations is broken into three separate groups: Top, Medium Size and Smaller Size based on their global popularity as a travel destination.

When reviewing markets outside of the Top 50 (51 to 101), Emerging Destinations with the largest growth include the tiny French-Dutch island of St Maarten teeming with beautiful beaches, untouched natural heritage and an array of outdoor activities. The idyllic island saw a huge 91% rise in interest. African destinations feature in the list, with Congo and Ethiopia seeing 49% and 46% growth in year-over-year traveller interest, respectively. Central Asia is also on the rise with the architecturally rich countries of Azerbaijan (42%) and Uzbekistan (37%) both seeing growth.

In the Top 50 Emerging Destinations, the report reveals more established tourist destinations in South America thriving and in the Top 3. Argentina (1 st ), Austria (2 nd ) and Brazil (3 rd ) with increases of 39% for both Argentina and Austria and 27% for Brazil. Increased flight connections and a declining currency have made Argentina an attractive destination; the country is now easier and good value to visit. Within Europe, Austria has benefitted from the launch of more frequent flights to and from Germany, Japan and the USA.

Ever-popular Spain remains in the top three list of worldwide Popular Destinations for travellers across the world, but it’s the United States that has usurped the Mediterranean hotspot, claiming the number one spot. Turkey, a top 10 destination for travellers worldwide, has seen the biggest jump in growth from ninth to seventh place compared to 2018 in the list of Popular Destinations. With more people flocking to Istanbul as well as the country’s mountains and divine Mediterranean beaches.

The growing awareness of sustainable choices in travel is reflected in Skyscanner’s Travel Trends report with 1 in 5 travellers from Europe, Middle East and Africa selecting Skyscanner’s ‘Greener Choice’ label. Greener Choice flights are identified by looking at factors like aircraft model, age, fuel efficiency, flying distance and seat capacity. ‘Greener choice’ labels highlight the flights which emit less CO 2 than the average for the route travellers are searching.

When looking at flight travel specifically, 2019 saw an increase in Premium Economy with bookings on long haul flights growing by 8% year-over-year revealing that when travellers are taking longer flights, they are willing to stretch their budget for those extra comforts.
