Biobased products are complete or partial derivatives from naturally occurring/growing materials such as agricultural, plants, and forest materials and serve as an alternative to traditional product derivatives of petroleum. Biobased products can be segmented into multiple categories including; adhesives, lubricants, construction materials and composites, fuel additives, detergents, inks, fertilizers, surfactants, bioplastics and biomaterials. Global production of biobased products is over 50 million tonnes (excluding biofuels). European Commission conducted an assessment to evaluate the utilization of biofuels and biobased products and found this segment to have created 300,000 jobs generating an annual revenue of ~EUR 57 billion.

Higher process efficiency can be achieved through bio-catalysis and fermentation when compared to traditional synthesis routes, resulting in a reduced demand of water and energy in the production, and decrease in toxic waste. Since the source of biobased products are natural resources, there are added advantages such as reduced CO2 emissions, lower toxicity, biodegradability etc. Some of the prominent biobased products include cellulose fibers, cellulose derivatives, non-food starch, tall oils, derivatives of fatty acid such as surfactants and products from fermentation viz. organic acids including lactic acid, citric acid, ethanol and other amino acids. Advancements in the industrial biotechnology space have brought forward novel manufacturing techniques to produce industrial chemicals, and biobased products have a significant role to play to cater to the growing demands.

Technically, biobased product counterparts can replace almost every fossil resource-based industrial material. Adoption of life cycle analysis and circular economy concepts have also accelerated the move towards biobased products as it meets the criteria for easy recycling and can facilitate the shift from linear fossil-based productions to greener circular economy. This RSER VSI aims at contributing to the new insights on value-added/high-value biobased products from various resources (biomass feedstock, supply chains and bioprocess) to their applications, technical challenges and advancement in a sustainable manner.

This special issue of RSER will accept 'Review articles', 'Full-length original research articles', 'Expert Insights' and ‘Case studies'. Kindly note papers submitted for consideration for this VSI must be within the scope of RSER.

All articles are by invitation only from the Editor in Chief or Dr V. K. Gupta (Managing Guest Editor).

Authors interested in submitting a paper should email Dr Aoife Foley: [email protected] Or Dr V. K. Gupta: [email protected], with a 500 word summary and table of contents of their proposed paper, with the email subject line including" Sustainable Bioprocesses and Bioproducts from Biomass and Bioresources ".

If an author’s proposal is approved, they should submit selecting the “VSI Biobased Processes and Products” article type. Authors of papers submitted to this Special Issue must state clearly in their cover letter the article type (i.e. either a 'Review article', 'Full-length article', 'Expert Insights' or 'Cutting Edge').
