”看美剧学英文“专栏第九期来啦。这周我重新看了《致命女人》第8-9集，从中挑选了10个地道表达，我们一起来学习。前八期见：

have one's number

have one's number 表示“对某人知根知底，了解某人的底细”，英文释义是to know what sb is really like and what they plan to do，比如 ◇ He thinks he can fool me but I have his number. 他以为他能糊弄我，但我清楚他的真面目。

联想到另一个表达 do a number on sb/sth ，表示“严重伤害某人，严重损害某物”，相当于hurt/damage sb/sth badly。

rat sb out

rat sb out 表示"出卖某人，告发某人"，比如 ◇You can’t rat out your teammates. 你不能告发队友。

这是一个高频词，《绝望的主妇》也出现过：

再扩展三个关于rat的表达：

rat on sb ，表示”泄露秘密，告密“，比如 ◇Where I come from, you don't rat on your friends. 在我的老家，谁都不出卖朋友。

a rat race 也是一个高频词组，指”你死我活的竞争，激烈的战争“，比如 ◇I had to get out of the rat race and take a look at the real world again. 我得从疯狂的竞争中解脱出来，重新审视真实的世界。

rug rat 我们在如何看《致命女人》学地道英文？(2) 学过，表示“小孩”，相当于child, 是一个美国俚语。

at death's door

at death's door 表示因为病重而”声明危在旦夕，病危“。

《经济学人》一篇文章便以此为标题：

dwell on sth

dwell on sth 表示“老是想着，唠叨，沉湎于”，英文解释是to think or talk a lot about sth, especially sth it would be better to forget，往往跟不快的事情，比如 ◇So you made a mistake, but there's no need to dwell on it. 你是错了，不过不必老是想着这事儿。

《绝望的主妇》里也出现了这个表达：

crash and burn

crash and burn 字面义是”摧毁烧坏“，喻指”彻底失败“，比如 ◇When Senator Gary Hart crashed and burned, most of his people caught on somewhere else in a few weeks. 当参议员加里哈特竞选失败时，他的大多数支持者在区区几个星期之中就开始改换门庭了。

再扩展一些类似的并列结构：

cut and dried 我们在当《经济学人》遇上《致命女人》，会擦出怎样的火花？讲过，表示“已成定局，不容更改”。

hot and heavy 我们用英文来理解If something or someone is hot and heavy, they are full of strong emotions or sexual feelings，类似于中文中的“干柴烈火”。

yes and no 按字面理解即可，表示“既是又不是”，难以明确答复，比如

◇‘Were you surprised?’ ‘Well, yes and no. I knew they were planning something, but I wasn’t sure what. ’ “你觉得惊讶吗？”“嗯，既惊讶又不惊讶。我知道他们在计划着什么，但又不确定是什么。

out an d about 也是高频词，表示病愈后“外出走动”。

come to one's senses

come to one’s sense 表示”恢复理智，冷静下来“，比如 ◇He waited for Dora to come to her senses and return. 他盼着多拉冷静下来后回来。

这个短语出现的频率极高：

be caught in the crossfire

be caught in the crossfire crossfire是”交叉火力“的意思，be caught in the crossfire 表示”被卷进争端，被无辜牵连“，比如 ◇ They say they are caught in the crossfire between the education establishment and the government. 他们称自己被卷进了教育机构与政府之间的争端。

get through to sb

get through to sb 有两层含义：

1.表示”打通，联系上某人“，比如 ◇I tried calling you several times but I couldn't get through. 我试着给你打了几次电话，但都没打通。

2.表示“让某人理解，让某人接受”，比如 ◇ I find it impossible to get through to her. 我发觉根本无法让她听懂。

我们在如何看《致命女人》学地道英文？(2) 还学过短语 put sb through sth ，带大家复习一遍，温故而知新。

put sb through sth 指“让某人遭受某事”，后面往往跟磨难或痛苦，剧中的that指的是丈夫出轨这件事。再比如小红生了一场大病，让家人担惊受怕了数月，这时便可以说 ◇She have put your family through a lot recently. 最近她让家人受了不少苦。

put A through to B 还可表示”把A电话转接给B“，比如请问可以让汤姆接电话吗？ Can you put me through to Tom?

color sb +adj.

color me +adj. 表示”我感到...“，比如 ◇ color me surprised/confused/embarrassed 我感到意外/困惑/尴尬，比如 ◇ ‘Color me amazed!’ says prize-winner Angela Harris. “我感到非常意外！”获奖者安杰拉·哈里斯说道。

forever

forever 我们都熟悉它表示“永远”的意思，其实它还可以表示“很久”，比如 ◇It took forever to clean up after the party. 聚会后收拾打扫花了很长时间。
