Full paper submissions that explore new developments in ecosystem services and biodiversity finance mechanisms, original case studies, and assessment methods are sought. Solutions involving public sector, private sector and/or civil society all are encouraged.

Successful submissions will explore solutions that highlight one or more of the following:

- Improvements in the efficiency of policy or program delivery toward specific biodiversity and sustainable development outcomes;

- Applications that illustrate the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services finance solutions in supporting food security and nutrition in the world

- Reallocation or re-alignment of existing funds, policies or incentives to increase the efficiency of achieving specific biodiversity and sustainable development outcomes;

- National, regional, or local policy design and implementation to avoid future costly biodiversity losses;

- Innovative resource mobilization strategies toward bridging a specifically identified biodiversity finance gap toward sustainable development objectives;

- Innovative valuation and assessments methods developed to support the process of decision making and architected to meet specific policy demands;

- Success stories and failures in Biodiversity Finance Solutions;

- Remote sensing, ecosystem service mapping, and ecological-economic modeling: applications for development of specific biodiversity and sustainable development outcomes;

- The role of ecosystem services and biodiversity finance in supporting local economies;

The growing need for Renewable Energy Sources has led to the increased interest in shallow geothermal applications for the heating and/or cooling of buildings. The integration of heat exchangers in the elements of the structure that interface with the ground, such as foundations, tunnels, and diaphragm walls, is particularly attractive, due to the inherent cost savings involved in combining a required structural component with the harvesting of geothermal energy. Thermoactive geostructures present the additional benefit of relying on localized resources (the ground) and, therefore, do not need additional infrastructural investments. By providing an alternative to fossil fuels and reducing peak demand from the grid, they also provide an attractive tool towards energy independence and distributed generation with no adverse impact on the environment. However, the widespread application of this sustainable technology is currently hindered by the large disparity in development and uneven regulatory frameworks worldwide.

This special issue will gather up-to-date and reliable information from leading researchers in this field and would bring increased confidence and visibility to these applications. We plan to welcome papers on the following, but not limited to, topics:

- Thermal ground investigation methods (field and laboratory)

- Numerical constitutive modeling of thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of soils and rocks

- Thermoactive geostructure design.

- Thermoactive geostructure analysis of in situ tests and measurements

- Energy performance assessment

- Sustainability and urban planning

- City scale geothermal energy systems

- Implementation to new underground infrastructure such as metro and road Embankment systems

- Thermo-hydro-mechanical impacts

- Environmental impacts

- Legislation issues

- Economic issues

- Public awareness
