写作社群里面有同学写了一个句子：
Some students waste lots of time on playing smartphones, which not only undermines their academic performance but also damages their health.
这名同学将“玩手机”翻译成play smartphones，这一说法其实是有问题的。因为play后面一般跟游戏、乐器以及球类运动搭配，比如：play basketball/games/the piano/the guitar
如果要表达“摆弄、玩弄某物体”，用的是play with something，比如“玩玩具”是play with toys，“玩头发”可以说play with somebody’s hair
但具体到手机，通常不说play mobile phones，也不说play with mobile phones，因为play with mobile phones意思类似于像儿童玩玩具一样把手机翻来翻去摆弄，而不是“玩手机里面各种app”。
实际上，我们说的“玩手机”意思更加接近于“刷手机”或者“看手机”。对于这一意思，英文里面常用的一个表达是scroll on your phone，比如英国独立报有这么一个标题：I have an addiction to scrolling on my phone as soon as I wake up – help!
其中scroll on your phone就是我们说的“刷手机”，它也可以说成scroll through your phone
如果要表达“刷社交媒体”，可以说scroll on/through social media，“刷推特”可以说scroll on/through twitter
英语里面还有一个词doomscrolling，它指的是不断在网上查看负面新闻或消息，这种行为会对人的心理健康造成负面影响。
“玩手机”还有一个更加简单的说法somebody is on their phone，比如可以说：People who are always on their phones can miss out on important moments happening around them.
如果要表达“专注看手机”，可以说somebody is glued to their phone，单词glue本义是“胶水”，be glued to something引申为“目不转睛看某事物”。要表达“目不转睛看屏幕”，也可以说be glued to the screen
很多人可能会每隔几分钟就忍不住想要解锁一下手机，看看有没有什么新消息或者新帖子，这种行为用英文表达是check your phone。比如时代周刊有一篇文章标题是：How to Stop Checking Your Phone Every 10 Seconds（怎样阻止自己每十秒看一次手机）
此外，如果要表达“戒除手机成瘾”，可以说break your phone addiction，或者是break up with your phone，比如可以说：Studies indicate that people who attempt to break up with their phones often report improved mental well-being.
总结一下：
“玩手机”可以说scroll on/through your phone，也可以说be on your phone
要表达“专注看手机”，可以说be glued to your phone，“查看手机消息”可以说check your phone
