2018年11月3日,丹·卡斯尔登(Dan Caselden)熬夜玩《反恐精英》这款游戏时,创造了天文学界的历史。每当他的游戏角色“死亡”时,他都会登入笔记本电脑,查看运行中的NASA太空望远镜图像的自动搜索情况

卡斯尔登向参与“后院世界:第九行星”(Backyard Worlds: Planet 9)项目的天文学家们发送了电子邮件。在排除了这是图像伪影的可能性后,天文学家们意识到,他们正在观察一颗非同寻常的星体,即一颗距离地球50光年、以每秒200公里的速度穿越银河系的极其暗淡的天体。该天体被命名为WISE 1534-1043,但由于该星体的天体特征独特,发现过程又纯属偶然,因此该星体很快就获得了“意外”这个绰号。
现在,天文学家们认为,卡斯尔登发现的是一颗褐矮星,一颗由于质量不足以引发核聚变,因此未能成为恒星的星体。“这颗星体的形成过程和恒星一样,”英国莱斯特大学的天文学家莎拉·凯斯威尔(Sarah Casewell)如是说,“然而,这颗星体由于质量不足,所以从未能够将氢聚变成氦来燃烧。”
这颗名为“意外”的褐矮星的发现,揭露了我们对褐矮星认识的不足。褐矮星的质量范围约为木星质量的13倍到75倍,甚至更大。然而,褐矮星质量范围的两端具体的极值是多少,仍是一个悬而未决的问题。“大家总是开会争论这个问题,”英国爱丁堡大学的天文学家贝丝·比勒(Beth Biller)如是说。科学家们尤其纠结褐矮星的质量下限,并就此争论不休。虽然达到13倍的木星质量就有了发生氘聚变的条件,而氘聚变是区分褐矮星气态巨行星的特征,但该质量边界可能会有所变化。比勒表示:“13个木星质量并无特殊含义,该数值完全是为了方便而设定的。”
褐矮星之间的温度差异很大温度最高的褐矮星表面温度约为2000摄氏度。“略高于蜡烛火焰的温度,”比勒表示。至于温度最低的褐矮星,其表面温度则低于200摄氏度。由于缺乏内部热源,褐矮星将在数十亿年内逐渐冷却,直到降到较低的温度。(亚矮星进一步模糊了行星和褐矮星之间的界限,其表面温度甚至可能更低。一颗被命名为WISE 0855-0714的亚矮星,其表面温度低于冰点。“这是已知的太阳系外最冷的天体,”比勒说道。)
人们仍不清楚褐矮星在近距离下的外观。尽管“褐矮星”这个名称是于1975年,由天文学家吉尔·塔特尔(Jill Tarter)命名的,但该天体很可能并非褐色。其真实颜色更偏橙色或红色。“无论如何,褐矮星这个名称已经定下来了,”加州理工学院的天文学家戴维·柯克帕特里克(Davy Kirkpatrick)表示道。
褐矮星也有大气层,并且其大气层上可能有着和木星类似的带状和斑点状的风暴。去年,比勒和她的同事利用褐矮星大气层上的风暴,测量了一颗距离地球约34光年开外的褐矮星的表面风速。团队首先观察到:褐矮星大气层中的特征随着褐矮星的旋转而浮现又消失。然后,研究人员将这一速度与通过磁场测量得到的褐矮星内部旋转速度作比较。通过比较这两个数值,研究人员计算出,该褐矮星表面的风速超过每小时2300公里——是木星风速的五倍以上。
由于褐矮星在恒星和行星之间架起了一座桥梁,所以可以帮助我们理解两者之间的关系。在质量范围的上限处,最大褐矮星和最小恒星之间的界限有助于我们了解核聚变是如何开始的。瑞士日内瓦大学的诺兰·格里夫斯(Nolan Grieves)表示,只有一个天体的核心达到大约300万摄氏度时,才能引发核聚变,从而引发链式反应,将氢转化为氦。但是,没有人知道,确切的需要多少质量才能引发核聚变;也无人知晓,褐矮星是在何时变成恒星的。“对于有关恒星演化的诸多方面的知识,我们仍然相当不确定,”比勒说道,“引发核聚变的最小质量值到底是多少,这是一个问题。”
最近,由格里夫斯领导的研究小组发现了五颗大质量褐矮星,其质量在木星的77到98倍之间。“这些褐矮星的质量恰好处于氢聚变开始发生的边界质量值,”格里夫斯说道。然而,目前尚不清楚这五颗褐矮星的质量究竟是位于质量界限之上还是之下。“我们对这些天体的真实性质一无所知,”格里夫斯表示,“因为它们的质量非常接近极值。”
某些褐矮星可能与恒星极其相似,甚至也许拥有自己的行星。“我们已知,有些褐矮星系统中似乎存在环绕褐矮星运行的原行星盘,”柯克帕特里克表示道。“并且,种种迹象表明,某些褐矮星周围或许也存在绕其公转的外行星。一个如圣杯般神圣的目标是去找到一颗存在‘外行星凌日’现象的褐矮星。”
那颗名叫“意外”的褐矮星,则处在褐矮星质量范围的最小值一端。这是一颗极小、极冷的幽暗星体。“这颗褐矮星的质量才刚刚达到了我们能够探测到的边界值”,柯克帕特里克表示道。天文学家们渴望弄清低质量褐矮星和高质量气态巨行星之间的区别。因此,像“意外”这样的小而幽暗的褐矮星成为了科学家们的研究目标。
这颗名为“意外”的褐矮星似乎也是由一些奇怪的物质构成的。随着宇宙年龄增长,超新星会喷射出大量的重元素,如碳和氧——天文学家称之为“金属元素”。因此,在宇宙历史早期形成的古老天体中,金属含量往往较少。而新天体的金属含量则较多。然而,尽管褐矮星“意外”是在太阳系附近发现的——那里主要聚集了年轻且富含金属的恒星——但褐矮星“意外”中的金属含量却似乎很少。“我们认为,这很可能是一颗较老的褐矮星,或许形成于银河系金属富集之前,”柯克帕特里克说道。凯斯韦尔补充说,这颗褐矮星极有可能是银河系中“最早形成的褐矮星之一”,该星体形成于银晕的外围,然后向内迁移,到达如今的位置。
正如宇宙中诸多其他现象一样,这一发现表明,这些既难以捉摸又神秘莫测的天体有着各种各样的特征,因此,将这些天体划分到严格定义的某一类别绝非易事。与此同时,卡斯尔登希望在未来能为该领域做出更多贡献。也许现在,当他确定了探寻目标之后,他能锚定类似的天体进行研究。“我想找到另一颗类似‘意外’的褐矮星,”他说,“而且我希望这次不是意外。”
