With China's National Day holiday week beginning on Oct 1, the battle of potential blockbusters for the vacation market is about to begin.
The latest figures from major online ticket sites, such as Maoyan and Taopiaopiao, show that 11 new movies will premiere around or during the holiday week.
Finding it hard to choose from the myriads of temptations? How about an exciting action movie co-starred by Donnie Yen and Andy Lau?
Chasing the Dragon
, an upcoming crime action movie directed by Wong Jing, chronicles the rise and fall of drug lord Ng Ski-ho, also known as "Crippled Ho", and his complex brotherhood with a corrupt police officer in Hong Kong.
The gangster controlled the majority of drug trafficking then, but was later arrested and sentenced to 30 years behind bars.
What to expect in the movie?
1. Donnie Yen as a ruthless criminal
In a career spanning three decades, actor Donnie Yen has starred as many heroes, such as a martial arts master in the
Ip Man
franchise and a blind monk in
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
.
So it may come as a surprise for you to see Yen's screen transformation from a hero to a ruthless criminal.
"I have had a goal for a long time that my movies transfer positive energy. So, when director Wong Jing invited me to play Ng, I initially hesitated," Yen said, during a Beijing event to promote the movie last week.
But Wong, one of the most prolific film directors in Hong Kong, helped him overcome such concerns. The director made Yen believe the role would become a breakthrough in his career as he had not played such a part before.
For girls who are obsessed with facial attractiveness, this movie will provide a visual feast. Andy Lau, one of the most celebrated stars in Hong Kong showbiz, will team up with Yen to present the reality of the lawless, densely-populated slums in Hong Kong in the 1960s and '70s, filled with gangsters.
"It was a very exciting experience. I've learned a lot of acting skills from Lau," says Yen, 54, who has won many awards, most notably in the action choreography sector.
3. Well-rounded characters
To better play the role, Yen recruited a coach to teach him to speak in the Teochew dialect, as Ng was born and raised in Shantou, Guangdong province, where it is spoken.
But Yen decided the movie will not be a simple good-versus-evil story. As one of the movie's executive producers, Yen pondered his character who is conflicted while trying to be a good husband, brother and a crime boss all at the same time.
After the sneak previews held last week in Beijing, the movie received praise from the audiences.
Chasing the Dragon
is the Chinese equivalent of
Once Upon a Time in America
, the 1984 classic about New York gangsters, Wong says.
The film also depicts corrupt British police officers' discrimination against their Hong Kong colleagues, which Wong says he wanted to expose.
"In the past, I would say I don't know if someone asked me what my favorite work is. But now I will give the answer —
Chasing the Dragon
," the 62-year-old filmmaker said.
The movie will be released on Sept 30. Leave your comment below if you want to see it. By 7 pm tomorrow, the
10
comments with most likes will get
two
tickets each for the movie.
