Should I eat more to increase my milk supply?

哺乳期间需要吃额外的食物来增加奶量吗?

As long as your baby is suckling well and fed on demand, your milk supply will meet her needs. Breastfeeding mothers only need an extra 500 kcal a day for milk production. If you follow the tips below, your breastmilk is ensured to be good quality.

只要宝宝是吸吮正确,和按宝宝需要喂哺,妈妈的奶量自然就能够满足她的需求。哺乳妈妈每天只需要从食物摄取额外500千卡热量以制造母乳。妈妈可以跟从以下的要诀,便能确保母乳的质素。

Eat a variety of foods but avoid overeating

Choose whole grains, and eat more vegetables and fruits

Eat a bit more meat, fish and eggs. Choose fish rich in omega-3 fatty acid but low in mercury content

Choose iodine-rich seafood, eat kelp or seaweed occasionally

5

Eat food high in calcium

6

Drink more water or soup

7

Drink less coffee or strong tea

8

Do not smoke or drink alcohol

9

Consult a registered Chinese medicine practitioner before taking      traditional herbal medicine or tonics


  • 食物要多样化、须避免过量进食

  • 选全谷类的食物,多吃蔬菜和水果

  • 略增加肉、鱼、蛋类的分量,多选含奥米加-3脂肪酸较多,而甲基汞(汞即水银)含量低的鱼类

  • 多选碘质丰富的海产,间中进食海带

  • 注意摄取钙质丰富的食物

  • 多喝水或清汤

  • 少喝咖啡、浓茶

  • 不吸烟、不喝含酒精的饮品

  • 只应在注册中医指导下,服用药材补品


Furthermore, outdoor activities and sun bath help to increase the amount of vitamin D in your breastmilk. Vitamin D helps the absorption of calcium which is essential for the growth of your baby's bone.

另外,妈妈可多作户外活动和晒太阳,有助增加母乳中的维他命D,帮助宝宝吸收钙,有助骨骼成长。

Should I avoid any food when I am breastfeeding? Should I take tonic food?

哺乳期间要不要戒口?可不可以进补?


You should restrict consumptions on caffeinated drinks like coffee, strong tea and some soft drinks or you can consider decaffeinated options so to minimise the effect of caffeine on babies. You should avoid alcohol because of its adverse effect on health eg. affect judgment. Alcohol disrupts flow of breastmilk. It passes through breastmilk and may impair your baby's development. If you must drink on special occasions, make sure you limit your drinks to a small amount and avoid breastfeeding your baby within 2 hours.

Tonic food taken for general health would not affect breastfeeding. However, if it is a traditional herbal medicine, you should consult a registered Chinese medicine practitioner before taking.


哺乳的妈妈需限制饮用含咖啡因的饮料,如咖啡、浓茶或某些汽水等。或考虑饮用不含咖啡因的咖啡或奶茶,以减少宝宝因中枢神经系统受咖啡因刺激,而难于入睡。酒精有损健康且有碍判断,哺乳期间喝酒亦可能减少乳汁制造和影响宝宝发育,所以建议妈妈不要饮用含酒精的饮品。若因特别情况有需要喝酒,应只饮用少量及避免在饮用后两小时内喂哺母乳。

进补的若是食材,一般不影响喂哺母乳。但若是中药,建议先请教中医。

Can I use insect repellent (mosquito repellent) if I am breastfeeding?

哺乳期间妈妈可否使用昆虫驱避剂(蚊怕水)?


It is also safe to use DEET-containing insect repellent during pregnancy and while you are breastfeeding if it is used as instructed by the manufacturer.

You are advised to wash the repellents off your hands and breast before handling your baby to avoid accidental ingesting the repellent by the baby. Certainly, it would be better to use alternative measures e.g. long-sleeved clothes, bed net or use insect repellent that is made by natural ingredients to prevent mosquito bites.

在怀孕期或是正在授乳的妈妈,若遵照产品标签上说明,适量使用含避蚊胺 (DEET) 成分的昆虫驱避剂,是不会对胎儿和宝宝有不良影响的。

建议妈妈在接触宝宝或喂奶前,彻底清洁双手及乳房,以免宝宝吃下残余的避蚊胺。当然,采取其他防蚊措施,如穿着长袖衣服和使用蚊帐,或选用天然配方的昆虫驱避剂那就更好。
