Why do some people assume that all children are innocent?

When my oldest son was about 5 years old, he looked like a cute little hamster. One time I was about to cook dinner and he was hanging out in a kitchen with me. I looked at him and said: “You look so tasty, I think I'm gonna eat you!” and we started running around the kitchen isle in circles. He was laughing and I was laughing and running for a few minutes. I even grabbed a tiny skillet and told him to get in - it was hilarious. Suddenly, he stopped and started crying desperately. He said: “Mommy, please don't eat me. I'm your baby.” I was shocked. All I could do is just hug him and kiss him and call him a silly boy.
People assume children are innocent because they believe everything we tell them, no matter how preposterous.
