Populism, the Future of Europe and Globalization:

the Key Contests in 2017

With elections in several major European countries taking place this year. One may wonder why so many countries currently are facing a populist backlash. Is rising populism really a rebellion led by “globalization’s losers”? Should this situation persist how Europe will continue to develop? Which way will Britain go after Brexit?

The crucial fact that should not be overlooked is that populism is a growing political power whose impact on domestic economies is hard to predict. After all, it is true that globalization has fundamentally transformed economics, sending low skill jobs to the developing world. Economic hollowing out, challenging employment markets and significant social welfare burdens all arise in the developed world. These are points that populist figures never get tired of highlighting.

In this regard, CCG and the Economist Intelligence Unit (The EIU) will co-host a roundtable. Robin Bew, Managing Director (CEO) of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), has taken a comprehensive look at political and economic trends worldwide. He will share with us his views and insights and present the EIU’s forecasts for 2017.

Robin joined the EIU in 1995. Prior to that, he was a macroeconomist with Her Majesty’s Treasury (the UK Finance Ministry). He has an MSc in Economics from the University of London, and a BSc in Economics and Business Finance from Brunel University. He has attended programs at the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business andat IE Business School in Madrid. Robin is also a Professor of Economics at IE Business School, Managing Director of the Economist Intelligence Unit, responsible for the overarching commercial and editorial success of the EIU’s business. Prior to becoming Managing Director, Robin was Editorial Director (2006-2013) and Chief Economist (1997-2013) of the EIU, responsible for the company’s editorial operations.
