The new information circuits:

Studying the digital public space

using digital methods

时间: 2019年12月16日下午3:30-5:30

地点: 国定路400号新闻学院办公楼二楼会议室

演讲嘉宾: Dominique Cardon, Professor of Sociology, médialab, Sciences Po

内容简介: After being perceived as a space of political emancipation, the web is now considered as the instrument of a dangerous degradation of public life. Current debates on "fake news", campaigns of harassment of personalities, confinement in information bubbles or the polarisation of public space have become major concerns. The digital space is described as a deregulated market for information governed by the whims of the algorithmic choices of the major web players. In this presentation, I would like to show how social sciences can mobilize digital methods to understand informational practices on the web and new circuits of digital information. The argument that will be developed is that, even profoundly disrupted by new network practices, the digital public space is still governed by structural constraints relating to the question of the popularity and authority of information sources. Based on work conducted on the situation of digital media in France and the United States, this conference will show how it is possible to map the new architecture of the information ecosystem.

嘉宾简介: Dominique Cardon is Professor of sociology and director of the Sciences Po Médialab. He is working on the transformation of the public space and the uses of new technologies. He published different articles on the place of new technologies in the no-global movement, alternative media and on the process of bottom-up innovations in the digital world. His recent research focuses on the analysis of the power of algorithms in the classification of digital information. His work seeks to articulate the sociology of science and technology with a sensitive approach to the transformations of contemporary social worlds. He is currently working on the social effects of the generalization of machine learning techniques in a ever-increasing number of situations of everyday life.
