2011 Text 4
Not On Board With Baby
The magazine cover showing an attractive mother holding a cute baby is hardly the only Madonna-and-child image on newsstands this week. There are also stories about newly adoptive – and newly single – mom Sandra Bullock, as well as the usual “Jennifer Aniston is pregnant” news.Practically every week features at least one celebrity mom, or mom-to-be, smiling on the newsstands.
In a society that so persistently celebratesprocreation, is it any wonder that admitting you regret having children is equivalent to admitting you support kitten-killing? It doesn’t seem quite fair, then, to compare the regrets of parents to the regrets of the children.Unhappy parents rarely are provoked to wonder if they shouldn’t have had kids, but unhappy childless folks are bothered withthe message that children are the single most important thing in the world: obviously their misery must be a direct result of the gaping baby-size holes in their lives.
①
The magazine cover showing an attractive mother holding a cute baby is hardly the only Madonna-and-child image on
newsstands
this week.
”
形象。
②
There are also stories about newly
adoptive
– and newly single – mom Sandra Bullock, as well as the usual “
Jennifer Aniston is pregnant
” news.
-
adoptive
adopt
(Someone's adoptive family is the family that adopted them)
。
-
Jennifer Aniston is pregnant news
Jennifer Aniston was 'hurt by false pregnancy reports'
Sandra Bullock
Jennifer Aniston
③
Practically
every week
features
at least one
celebrity
mom, or
mom-to-be
, smiling on the newsstands.
-
feature
◇This film features two of my favorite actors.
◇He will be featured on the new TV program Monday evening.
-
practically
(almost; very nearly)
virtually
Unfortunately, these critics are
virtually/practically
forgotten.

①
In a society that so
persistently celebratesprocreation
,
is it any wonder that
admitting you
regret
having children
is equivalent to
admitting you support
kitten-killing
?
③
Unhappy parents rarely are
provoked
to wonder if they shouldn’t have had kids, but unhappy childless
folks
are
bothered
with
the message that children are
the single most important
thing in the world: obviously their
misery
must
be a direct result of
the
gaping
baby-size holes in their lives.
-
persistently
(If something happens persistently, it happens again and again or for a long time)
persistent
,比如
◇The allegations have been persistently denied by ministers.
-
形容词
persistent
(determined to do sth despite difficulties, especially when other people are against you and think that you are being annoying or unreasonable)
,比如
◇She felt embarrassed by his persistent attentions.
One of the more persistent beliefs about the global economy is that Asians are more frugal than others.
persistence
◇Her persistence paid off when she was offered the job of manager.
persistent
-
celebrate
(to praise sb/sth)
,比如
◇We celebrate somebody like a Steve Jobs, who has created two or three different revolutionary products.
A page with the same name was also set up on GitHub, which was also used to host a sister project called ”955.wlb” (standing for “work-life balance”).This
celebrates
firms with more relaxed working hours.
-
procreation
[ˌprəukri'eiʃən]
(The process by which an organism produces others of its kind)
procreate
(to produce children or baby animals)
,与
reproduce
◇Most young women feel a biological need to procreate.
-
Is it any wonder that…
(used for emphasizing that a particular situation or result is not surprising)
◇With such talented players,
is it any wonder
they won?
-
be equivalent to sth
相等”
比如
◇Eight kilometres is roughly equivalent to five miles.
-
equivalent
(something that has the same value, purpose, job etc as something else)
,
equivalent
Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter
Renren, China’s equivalent of Facebook
。
②
It doesn’t seem quite
fair
,
then
, to
compare
the regrets of parents
to
the regrets of the children.
-
◇
A fair number of people came along.
◇
There's a fair chance that we might win this time.
◇
a fair and breezy day
-
then
◇If you won't tell him, then I will.
◇Start off early, then you won't have to rush.
-
compare sth to sth
(to examine people or things to see how they are similar and how they are different)
,如
◇Note how smooth the skin of the upper arm is, then compare it to the skin on the elbow.
-
compare sth to sth
(If you compare one person or thing to another, you say that they are like the other person or thing.)
,比如
◇Davies' style of writing has been compared to Dickens'.
regret
(a feeling of sadness or disappointment that you have because of sth that has happened or sth that you have done or not done)
,比如
◇It is with great regret that I accept your resignation.
-
kitten-killing
kitten
have kittens
(to be very anxious or nervous about sth)
,比如
◇My mother nearly had kittens when I said I was going to buy a motorbike.
③
Unhappy parents rarely are
provoked
to wonder if they shouldn’t have had kids, but unhappy childless
folks
are
bothered
with
the message that children are
the single most important
thing in the world: obviously their
misery
must
be a direct result of
the
gaping
baby-size holes in their lives.
-
provoke
(to
cause
a particular reaction or have a particular effect)
,
provoke anger/outrage/fury
,
:
sth provokes controversy
,
:
sth provokes widespread criticism
。
provoke outrage
The company, a major energy supplier in New England,
provoked justified outrage
in Vermont last week when it announced it was reneging on a longstanding commitment to abide by the strict nuclear regulations.
-
folk
[fəʊk]
(people in general)
,比如
◇ordinary working-class
folk
-
be bothered with sth
◇I
was bothered about
the blister on my hand.
What is
the single most effective way
to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions? Go vegetarian? Replant the Amazon? Cycle to work? None of the above. 4The answer is: make air-conditioners radically better.
-
misery
['mɪzəri]
(great suffering of the mind or body)
miserable
-
be a / the result of sth
The slowdown does not reflect disenchantment; quite the contrary. It
