顺便讲解一个地道表达:
On the off chance that...
表示“心存侥幸地,怀着渺茫希望地”,有点类似于汉语中的“万一”。比如◇杰瑞搭飞机去了成都,心想着或许能遇到汤姆:
Jerry had taken a flight to Chengdu
on the off chance that
he might be able to meet Tom.
《经济学人》一篇关于气候变化的文章也用到了这一表达:

表示“尖刻的,使人难堪的,咄咄逼人的"(
A withering look or remark is very critical, and is intended to make someone feel ashamed or stupid)
