01
by any chance

On the off chance that...
Jerry had taken a flight to Chengdu on the off chance that he might be able to meet Tom.

It took me a couple of days to figure out why I wasn't so excited about this prospect, even on the off chance that it works, and then, as Tom Friedman would say, it hit me.

02
withering

withering 表示“尖刻的,使人难堪的,咄咄逼人的"( A withering look or remark is very critical, and is intended to make someone feel ashamed or stupid) ,比如:
◇She gave him a withering look.

动词 wither 本义是植物“枯萎,干枯”,引申为“逐渐疲弱,每况愈下” (to gradually become weaker or less successful and then end ) ,比如:

◇His career had withered .

03
be out of one's favour

be out of one's favour/be out of favour with sb 喜爱”,比如: ◇The stock is currently out of favor with investors.

She is out of fav our with her colleagues .

She is unpopular with her colleagues.

反义表达为 be in one's favour be in favour with sb 表示“受...喜爱”,比如: ◇The island is very much in favour as a holiday destination.

04
as of sth

as of/from sth 表示“自某一时间起” (starting from a particular time or date and continuing)。

05
clear the air

clear the air 表示"消除隔阂,消除怨愤" (to remove the bad feelings between people) 。比如:
◇I had a massive argument with my boyfriend, but at least it has c leared the air.

06
see sth through

see sth through 表示“把...进行到底;坚持完成” (to not give up doing a task, project, etc. until it is finished) ,比如:

◇She's determined to see the job through .

07
put sb's mind at ease

put sb's mind at ease/rest 宽心“ (to do or say sth to make sb stop worrying about sth)

ease up/off 表示”放松,松懈“ ( If you ease up, you start to make less effort) ,比如”随着年龄增长,他工作起来就不再那么拼命了” 我们可以说:

As he got older, he started to ease up a little.

ease up/off (on sb) 苛刻” (to start to treat someone less severely) ,比如“我希望我的上司能对我宽厚一些”:
I wish my supervisor would ease up on me a bit.

ease 作动词可表示“小心缓慢地移动”,比如 ◇He eased himself into a chair .

ease sb into sth 熟悉”新事物 (to become or help sb to become familiar with sth new, especially a new job)

08
in disarray

in disarray 表示”混乱,凌乱“ (If people or things are in disarray, they are disorganized and confused) ,比如:

◇Ever since the outbreak of coronavirus, the city has been in disarray .

A time of disarray is also a moment of opportunity.

09
pull sb together

pull sb together 也是口语里高频表达,表示“振作起来,冷静下来” (to take control of your feelings and behave in a calm way) ,比如:
◇Stop crying and pull yourself together!

10
get/be caught up in sth

be/get caught up in sth (so involved in an activity that you do not notice other things)
