The White House has sought to assuage fears of a protracted US military intervention in Gaza, insisting Donald Trump’s plan to assume control of the enclave did not necessarily mean putting “boots on the ground”.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that while the president had made a “historic proposal for the United States to take over Gaza”, he had “not committed” to sending in US troops “just yet”.

“It’s been made very clear to the president that the United States needs to be involved in this rebuilding effort,” she said on Wednesday. “That does not mean boots on the ground in Gaza. It does not mean American taxpayers will be funding this effort.”

Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to resume Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, in his most explicit pledge yet to reject a lasting ceasefire as Donald Trump said that Palestinians could be resettled away from the enclave.

Israel and the Palestinian militant group agreed an initial truce last month that still has several more weeks to run, while talks are due to begin next week on a full halt to the war and the return of dozens of remaining Israeli hostages.

“We can’t leave Hamas there [in Gaza], because Hamas will continue the battle to destroy Israel . . . you can’t talk about peace . . . if this toxic murderous organisation is left standing,” the Israeli prime minister said at a White House press conference on Tuesday alongside the US president.

The European aviation industry has drastically scaled back its ambitions for hydrogen-powered planes to help it reach net zero by 2050, according to a new forecast that warns the costs of decarbonisation have “ballooned”.

Airlines, airports and other parts of the aviation sector have committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through a mix of new technologies, particularly by switching to alternative fuels.

But in an update to a net zero road map published on Tuesday, industry groups said they expected hydrogen-powered planes to be responsible for just 6 per cent of net emissions reductions by 2050, down from 20 per cent in 2021.

The EU, Australia, South Africa and India are among a host of big polluters expected to miss a UN deadline for new climate targets, coming up against economic constraints and political pressure following the Trump election.

Under the process started by the Paris agreement signed nearly a decade ago, almost 200 countries are due to submit fresh climate plans to the UN by early next week.

The plans are meant to include a specific country-specific headline figures for cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
