Current technology for information security and data privacy often does not mature completely because of regular changes in computer, network, and the general evolution of information and communication technology (ICT). Many improvements, from different perspectives, should be considered in the technology, so that the challenging nature of the requirements for the current and future computing environments can be accommodated. Untill now, efficient solutions for information security and data privacy, remains an elusive goal and a big challenge. Promising methodologies and technologies are required for the design and development of effective intelligent solutions. Machine Learning (ML) is a field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is concerned with constructing programs/systems that can improve their behavior with experience. Various machine learning techniques can be used for information security and data privacy to lead a secure information system to the extent possible. The focus of the special issue is on high quality research that addresses paradigms, development, applications and implications in the field of machine learning for addressing unique security issues introduced by new computing paradigms.

Reconfigurable computing has become major subjects of research in computing and electrical engineering during the last two decades as it has been identified as a powerful alternative for creating highly efficient computing systems. Reconfigurable computing offers substantial performance improvements when compared against traditional CPU-based processing architectures as it benefits from custom design tailored to specific applications and reconfiguration capabilities. Reconfiguration is characterized by the ability of hardware architectures or devices to rapidly alter the functionalities of its components and the interconnection between them as needed. Existing theoretical models and algorithms combined with commercially available FPGAs devices make reconfigurable computing a very powerful computing paradigm.
This special issue is devoted to extended journal versions of selected papers from the 2016 International Conference on Reconfigurable Computing and FPGAs (ReConFig'16) held in Cancun, Mexico, during November 30 to December 2, 2016. The ReConFig conference promotes the use of reconfigurable computing and FPGA technology for research, education, and applications, covering from hardware architectures and devices to custom computers and high performance systems. This special issue will also include other papers that address the same topics as the ReConFig conference.
Topics include:
- Models, methods, tools, and architectures for reconfigurable computing
- Compilation, simulation, debugging, synthesis, verification, and test of reconfigurable systems
- Field programmable gate arrays and other reconfigurable technologies
- Evolvable hardware and dynamic reconfiguration
- Algorithms implemented on reconfigurable hardware

-----------------------
In the last years it is manifest that the world of high-end parallel servers and distributed computing systems/applications (in their continuous evolving declinations of high-performance computing, grid computing, and cloud computing, and supports to mobile cloud computing) is paying increasing attention to the technical challenges related to quality of service, determination of temporal behavior and response of software platforms, interactivity, and performance of communication mechanisms and tools. In modern computation centers, traditional distributed applications may coexist with other supports and services that become more and more timesensitive (cross-border surveillance and object tracking, big data analysis, smart city application supports, net gaming, adaptive video streaming, etc.), and this tends to happen more and more frequently on virtual resources hosted by a virtualized infrastructure.
Therefore, the design, implementation, and deployment of distributed reliable systems must take into careful account the critical and still open technical challenges about the dynamic selection and runtime evaluation of interaction models and software technologies, as well as their temporal behavior, resource efficiency, performance, scalability, and coordination overhead vs. flexibility. In addition, we are experiencing growing interest and need for novel contributions about dynamic middleware solutions capable of taking context-aware resource management decisions to enforce the most appropriate quality levels depending on application SLAs and overall (possibly clustered) visibility of resource status. These solutions are particularly challenging when dealing with largescale open deployment environments and their associated scalability issues.
The purpose of this Special Issue (SI) is to gather high-quality papers about 'Reliability and Scalability of Communication Middleware and Distributed Applications' in the above perspective, thus offering to MONET readers a fresh and updated overview of the most relevant research activities ongoing in the area. The SI is also in association and synergy with the Reliable Software Technologies and Communication Middleware (RST) track that the Guest Editors are organizing within the 32nd ACM SAC 2017 conference (around 30%-40% of SI articles will be extended versions of selected best papers from RST, the other ones will be selected from open call).
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following scope:
- Cloud computing advances for cyber-physical systems and mobile cloud computing
- Communication middleware for efficient reliability in wide-scale environments
- Efficient and context-aware management of big data flows (e.g., to support smart city apps)
- Efficient integration with run-time supports
- Reactive stream processing and on line processing of big data flows
- Reliable and time-sensitive distribution models
- Resource-efficient and timeconstrained interaction models
- Scalability solutions and evaluation of reliable communications and
operating systems and virtualization technologies

Context awareness (CA) refers to systems can both sense and react based on their environment. The systems may have information about the circumstances under which they are able to operate and adapt their behavior accordingly based on rules or an intelligent stimulus. Such systems are a component of a mobile computing environment.
Currently context has been considered as part of a process in which users are involved, hence specifying and developing context models are needed to support context-aware applications to (a) adapt interfaces, (b) tailor the set of application-relevant data, (c) increase the precision of information retrieval, (d) discover services, (e) make the user interaction implicit, or (f) build smart environments. Context related to human factors is structured into three categories: (a) information on the user, (b) the user's social environment, and (c) the user's tasks. Likewise, context related to physical environment is structured into three categories: (a) location, (b) infrastructure, and (c) physical conditions.
Context-aware systems are concerned with the acquisition of context, the abstraction and understanding of context, and application behavior based on the recognized context. In some applications, as the user's activity and location are crucial, context awareness has been concentrated more deeply on location awareness and activity recognition. Three important aspects of context are: (a) where you are; (b) who you are with; and (c) what resources are nearby.
Natute of Computation and Communication focuses on rigorous approaches and cutting-edge solutions, which encompass three classes of major methods:
- Those that take inspiration from nature for the development of novel problem solving techniques;
- Those that are based on the use of computers or networks to synthesize natural phenomena; and
- Those that employ natural materials (e.g., molecules,) to compute or communicate.
This special issue on Context-Aware Systems: and Applications (ICCASA 2016, 2017) and Natute of Computation and Communication (ICTCC 2016, 2017) in the ACM/Springer Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) Journal is a place for highly original ideas about how CA and Nature-Inspiration are going to shape computing systems of the future. Hence, it focuses on rigorous approaches and cutting-edge solutions which break new ground in dealing with the properties of CA and Nature. Its purpose is to make a formal basis more accessible to researchers, scientists, professionals and students as well as developers and practitioners in computer science by providing them with state-of-the-art research results and future opportunities and trends.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has significantly progressed in recent years by relying heavily on wireless communications. Currently, most of the devices and systems are connected via wireless technologies and numerous emerging solutions and applications are proposed based on wireless communications. Further, with the introduction of concepts such as Internet of Things (IoTs), nearly countless number of devices will be connected in a global network through wireless interfaces, using standard protocol solutions. The connectivity of these plethora of devices will be heavily relying on wireless communications and therefore, the challenges such as scalability, reliability, signal coexistence, data rate and energy consumption faced by the existing systems need to be thoroughly analyzed.
