Theteachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest himimmediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. Butthey were afraid of the people. Keepinga close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be honest. They hopedto catch Jesus in something he said so that they might hand him over to thepower and authority of the governor. Sothe spies questioned him: 'Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what isright, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God inaccordance with the truth. Isit right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?' 23 耶稣看出他们的诡诈,就对他们说,Hesaw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 拿一个银钱来给我看。 Showme a denarius. Whose portrait and inscription are on it?' 25 耶稣说,这样,该撒的物当归给该撒,神的物当归给神。'Caesar's,'they replied. He said to them, 'Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and toGod what is God's.' 26 他们当着百姓,在这话上得不着把柄。 Theywere unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished byhis answer, they became silent.
