The former chairman of Kweichow Moutai, the world’s most valuable liquor company, faces prosecution for corruption and has been ousted from the Chinese Communist Party.
Yuan Renguo, who was chairman of Kweichow Moutai Group between 2011 and 2018, was removed from all posts for taking a, quote, “extremely huge amount of bribes” and other “severe violations of discipline and law,” the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection alleged this week.
The commission said Yuan used dealer licenses for Moutai liquor as tools to pull political strings, and was involved in exchanges of sex, money and power.
Caixin has learned Yuan’s downfall was linked to the corruption case of Wang Sanyun, former party chief of the southwest province of Gansu, and Wang Xiaoguang, a former vice governor of Guizhou province.
Wang Sanyun and Wang Xiaoguang were both known for their fondness for Moutai.
Yuan stepped down as company chairman in May 2018, one month after Wang Xiaoguang was placed under investigation.
Last month, Wang Xiaoguang was sentenced to a 20-year jail term for bribery, embezzlement and insider trading.
A person close to Kweichow Moutai said Yuan offered Wang Xiaoguang licenses to run several shops.
