JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design andconduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced trainingfrom a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills andresearch independence needed for pursuit of a career. Job Description

"A Postdoctoral Fellow(""""postdoc"""") is a professionalapprenticeship designed to provide recent Ph.D. recipients with an opportunityto develop further the research skills acquired in their doctoral programs orto learn new research techniques, in preparation for an academic or researchcareer. In the process of further developing their own research skills, it isexpected that Postdoctoral Fellows will also play a significant role in theperformance of research at the University and augment the role of graduatefaculty in providing research instruction to graduate students. A PostdoctoralFellow works under the supervision of a regular faculty member, who serves as amentor to the Fellow, and it is expected that the faculty mentor will impartthe realities, and variety, of scientific careers, and will encourageexperiences outside the laboratory to broaden postdocs' aspirations. Within theconfines of the particular research focus assigned by that faculty member, thePostdoctoral Fellow functions with a considerable degree of independence andhas the freedom (and is expected) to publish the results of his or her researchor scholarship during the period of appointment. Thus, the role of PostdoctoralFellows is clearly differentiated from full-time technical employees. Postdocappointments are characterized by all of the following conditions: * theappointee was recently (within the last eight years) awarded a Ph.D. orequivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D., M.D.); * the appointment is temporary; * theappointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship; * theappointment is viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic and/or researchcareer; * the appointee works under the supervision of a faculty member; and *the appointee has the freedom and is expected to publish the results of his orher research or scholarship during the period of appointment. Job Description

The Mugridge lab (mugridgelab.org) in the Department of Chemistry &Biochemistry at the University of Delaware is seeking a postdoctoral fellow tojoin our team. We are a new lab focused on a mechanistic understanding ofenzymes that control RNA function and impact human disease. In particular, weare interested in understanding how diverse chemical modifications on RNA,which affect RNA structure, processing, translation, and stability, regulategene expression. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated postdoc toengage in a project developing new tools to study RNA modification biology andRNA-modifying enzymes.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD inchemistry, biochemistry, synthetic biology, or a related field, and haveexperience with protein engineering, in vitro aptamer selection, or chemicalbiology approaches. Candidates with experience in structural biology ormolecular biology with interests in protein-nucleic acid interactions and/orRNA modification biology are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicantwill have a strong scientific record, excellent communication skills, abilityto work independently and as part of team, and willingness to help mentorjunior scientists. This is an exciting opportunity to develop new tools tostudy RNA biology, apply these tools to study RNA function and/or RNA-modifyingenzymes, and contribute to growing and steering the scientific directions of anew lab.
