这项棋牌活动在美国已经火了几十年了。
尤其受到美国纽约曼哈顿上东区，这个知名的寸土寸金的富人区里太太们的欢迎。

九岁就在家人的熏陶下开始打麻将的Linda Feinstein就是其中之一。
她对麻将说得上是一见钟情。
对她来说，麻将是全世界最好的游戏，她渐渐不再满足于自己打麻将，而是开始成为一名麻将老师，十几年中收徒超过四千人。
“I guess I enjoy it, and I share my passion for the game with my students,” said Feinstein.
“我想我很享受打麻将。我也将这份热爱分享给了我的学生们，”Feinstein说。

她在纽约创立了曼哈顿麻将俱乐部，至今已有十九年历史。
每周一，上百名和她一样热爱麻将的人，会聚集在纽约中城的一家餐厅里，打一下午的麻将。
“I bring in a lot of people on Monday. My members, most of them are from Manhattan, the majority are from the upper east side,” said Feinstein.
Linda告诉我们：“每到周一，我都带着不少人在这里打麻将。我的会员们大多数都来自曼哈顿，其中的大部分都来自上东区。”
“I have a group that comes in every single year for 10 days and they play Mahjong on one of the Mondays from Beverly Hills. I've got someone flying to New York, [saying] ‘I want to celebrate my birthday.’ It's just absolutely amazing how everybody just falls in love with it and becomes addicted to it,” she added.
“每年还会有一群人从（洛杉矶）比弗利山庄来这里待十天，其中一个周一他们就会来这里打麻将。
我也遇到有人专门飞到纽约，说‘我想要来给自己过生日’。看到每个人都爱上这项游戏并为它上瘾是非常不可思议的一件事情。”她补充道。
“We are a wonderful
camaraderie
of women,” said Beverly, who had been with Feinstein’s club since the very beginning, “and we all get along, make new friends with games, socialize -- this is a wonderful place to be.”

每个周一，Linda从早上九点就开始为下午的麻将集会做准备。
她为所有的会员们准备麻将，并按照麻将水平为她们安排座位。
过了中午十一点，麻将爱好者们陆续前来，她们会交一笔45美元（约合

310元）的入场费，其中包含一顿午餐和一个下午的麻将时间。
“People say, they spent less coming here than spending a day shopping on Madison Avenue. So their husbands love it when they come here -- there won’t be any shopping done,” Feinstein said with a bright smile.
Feinstein笑着说，
“人们说，她们来这里花的钱比在麦迪逊大道购一天物少多了。所以她们的丈夫很喜欢她们来这里——绝对零购物。”
曼哈顿的麻将爱好者们不只在周一下午打麻将。她们在周中也会组起麻将局，甚至还会参加麻将锦标赛。
据统计，今年美国有将近20个州都举办了麻将锦标赛

这种麻将格外盛行的地方，今年的麻将赛事就有六场之多。
“It never ends. It’s just a lot of fun. And you can have fun doing it,” said Feinstein.
Feinstein告诉我们：”这种热情永不会停息。打麻将很有趣，而且你在这个过程中会收获很多快乐。”
谈起麻将，Feinstein就滔滔不绝，兴奋不已，她是这样评价这项游戏的：
“It's a serious game, yet there's a lightness about it. It's the best game. The best game in the world. And it's really fulfilling that traditional sentiment of the game. I don't know if [there's] any other game that really has such a past, such a history to it.”
“这是个挺正经的游戏，但又十分轻松有趣。这是最好的游戏，全世界最棒。而且打牌的过程中充满一种传统情结。我不知道还有哪样游戏能有麻将一样的历史和过去。”
民国时期的麻将局
现在我们所熟悉的麻将，是在清朝中叶，也就是十九世纪才逐渐成型。
根据地域的差别有很多不同的版本和规则，比如四川麻将、广东麻将、河北麻将等等。
而美国上东区太太们喜欢玩的，则是一种新的版本——美国麻将。
Gregg Swain是一位有近十年“麻龄”的艺术爱好者。她从2012年开始收集麻将，在2014年她合作完成了美国第一本追寻麻将历史和其中国艺术元素的书《麻将：游戏中的艺术》，并成为了一位“麻将专家”。

“Back in the 1920s, mahjong was the sixth biggest export from China,” said Swain, “and some of the best artisans in China worked in the Mahjong business.”
“在20世纪20年代，麻将是中国的第六大出口商品。在中国，很多优秀的工匠都投身在制作的麻将行业中。” Swain介绍道。
“What's kind of sad is that when mahjong was first being exported, Joseph Babcock who really took mahjong to the world decided that the Chinese rules were going to be way too complicated for Americans and Europeans,” Swain said.
“可惜的是，在最开始出口麻将的时候，将麻将介绍给全世界的美国人Joseph Babcock认为中国的麻将规则对于美国和欧洲人来说太复杂了，”Swain 说。

“So he simplified the game. There were too many ways to play mahjong. Nobody could agree,” Swain said.
“所以他简化了规则，于是后来就衍生出了很多不同的玩法，玩家间很难达成一致。”Swain 说。
1937年，五个纽约的女士建立了美国麻将协会。她们从中国麻将中借用了一些基本规则，但发展出了自己的一套体系。
“So in 1937 five ladies from New York got together, and they created the national mahjong league, ” Swain said. “And they took some of the principles of the Chinese game, but they really made it their own.”
