精听社群里面有同学问到了一个句子：
…there's the kitchen garden on the right and as you go round the first sharp corner you will find, to your left, an area where
different types of pear tree
have been planted as well as some lovely flowers.
上面的语料出自剑桥雅思听力真题。这名同学不理解的一点是，为什么要说different types of pear tree而不是different types of pear trees
这是一个常见的用词难点。这里其实写成pear trees也是对的。
《柯林斯英语用法指南》提到，在"types of"后面
用名词单数或者复数都是可以的
。比如既可以说：He eats most types of vegetables. 也可以说：He eats most types of vegetable.
《牛津高阶英语词典》里面也可以找到例证：There are three main types of contract(s). 这里contract用单复数都可以。
不过图书也指出，types of后面用名词单数形式会更加正式，因为用复数给人的感觉很笨重。
比如BBC一篇文章里面有这样的句子：
Those who have had cold, flu or Covid-like symptoms, diarrhoea and/or vomiting in the past three days, or any contact with anyone with
these types of illness
, has been asked not to visit the hospitals.
这里用these types of illness会更为正式。
口语里面可能还会遇到these type of这样的用法，比如：I love these type of books. 但它属于非正式表达。
不过对于what type/types of XX这样的句式。一般搭配则是：what type of XX（此时用名词单数），表示“哪种”。也可以说：what types of XX（此时用名词复数），表示“哪几种”。比如：
(1) What type of car do you like? 你喜欢什么类型的车？
(2) What types of cars do you like? 你喜欢哪几种类型的车？
如果type前面带有all/these/many这些表示复数概念的词，那么type也要用复数，即all/these/many types of something，不能说：all/these/many
type of
something
上面这些规律对于kinds of或者sorts of也是成立的。
总结一下：
types of后面可以用名词单数或者复数，用单数更正式。如果type前面带有all/these/many这些词，那么type也要用复数。以上规律对于kinds/sorts of也成立。
