Behind the curve by Robert Z. Lawrence时说,制造业在总就业中的比重必然萎缩。
Behind the Curve: Can Manufacturing Still Provide Inclusive Growth? by Robert Z Lawrence (Peterson Institute for International Economics)
Lawrence, one of the world’s leading trade economists, demolishes the belief that subsidies or tariffs will restore an economy in which a huge number of unskilled workers, predominantly men, earn good wages from factory jobs. On the contrary, he shows that in richer countries the shares of employment in manufacturing will naturally decline, for two powerful reasons: first, output per worker grows faster in manufacturing than in services; second, people spend more of their income on services than on manufactures as they become richer. These forces are inexorable. Whether or not a country runs a big trade surplus, the share of employment in manufacturing is sure to fall.
