海问律师事务所香港办公室合伙人刘洋律师在2024年香港海运周期间参与了四场主要活动,讨论了航运业特别是海事法律服务涉及的关键问题。
Edward Liu, Partner at Haiwen & Partners LLP, played a pivotal role during Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024, contributing to four major events that addressed critical maritime industry issues.
On 19 November 2024, Edward served as a keynote speaker at the "Decarbonisation of Shipping: Policy and Regulatory Issues" event, co-organized by the City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. As a member of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board and a key contributor to the Action Plan on Green Maritime Fuel Bunkering, he emphasized the need for a transition to zero-emission fuels and discussed the potential legal challenges of decarbonization.
The following day, Edward participated in the seminar "Maritime Risk and Compliance Management - Tackling Dark Fleets and Sanctions", organized by Lloyd's List Intelligence. He drew on his extensive experience to navigate complexities surrounding sanctioned-related issues, highlighting their impact on shipping contracts and the compliance challenges businesses face. Edward stressed the importance of robust compliance programs and proactive risk management strategies to mitigate sanctions exposure, fostering engaging discussions on best practices in the maritime sector.
Also on 20 November 2024, Edward contributed to the Xinde Marine Forum Hong Kong 2024, engaging with distinguished speakers from the UK and US to explore Hong Kong's opportunities and challenges as an international shipping centre. Moderated by the Director of Transport and Logistics at Invest Hong Kong, the dialogue emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in enhancing Hong Kong's position in high-value-added maritime services.
On 22 November 2024, Edward participated in a forum titled "Digitalization in the International Maritime Sector — Impacts & Legislative Response", organized by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. He shared insights from his dual perspective as a legal practitioner and arbitrator, focusing on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in maritime dispute resolution. Edward discussed both the benefits of AI in enhancing legal processes and the necessity for a cautious approach to its integration, addressing challenges related to the quality of arbitral awards and the integrity of the legal process.
Apart from the above events, on 1 November 2024, Edward attended the 2024 Shenzhen Global Marine Economy Forum and the World Laureates Ocean Forum, participating as a speaker on the panel "Activating a Network of Global Marine Cities for New Innovation and Business Synergies".
