What do you think we should do to reduce the use of cars or other vehicles in order solve the traffic problems ?

Many cities have traffic congestions (traffic jams). What do you think a city should do to deal with traffic jams and why?

China’s 50-lane traffic jam is every commander’s worst nightmare.

1. Traffic might be the single worst aspect of our transportation system today. Traffic hurts our economy, damage our environment, create unnecessary street, and keeps us from our friends and family.

2. Statistics indicate that American will spend over 3,000 hours of their life in traffic. That means the entire country is less productive.

3. India loses billions rupees to traffic jams.

turn the nightmare into reality be stranded on 滞留

merge from...to...

on the stretch between A and B A和B中间的一段

fender-benders (a minor collision between motor vehicles)

break the gridlock 疏通堵塞

lose time to sth.

strangle the potential for 束缚...

open up possibilities for 为...

City planners need to start to thread bicyclists into the fabric of street infrastructure, so that sensors keep track of cyclists and traffic signals allocate cycles to cyclists.

A one-way street carrying car traffic off the Steel Bridge meets Interstate Avenue, a major two-way arterial that feeds into a nearby Transit Center.

The one-way system also enables heavy bike traffic from three different separated bike paths that rejoin the grid at that point. The bike traffic that flows onto the road there, for example, gets its own phase in the signal cycle, allowing it to cross diagonally from path to on-street bike lane in a single motion, an unusual movement that’s clearly indicated by pavement markings and dedicated signage.

And yet, the intersection has a stellar safety record, as well as a red light compliance rate of 99.4 percent among people riding bikes, making it perhaps the most respected traffic signal in all of North America.

The problem is as simple as an old-school word problem: Jack in his red car and Jill in her blue car need to get from home to work at 9:00 am. There’s only one road with room for one car. How can Jack and Jill both get to work on time?

Reality is not that much more complicated than the above example, and the great part is that the solution is also really simple: smart lanes everywhere.

The idea of ending traffic might sound too good to be true, but it’s as simple as three key steps.

Based on local traffic data across the country, city, and regional governments should classify specific streets and highways as smart lanes.

Next, a federal infrastructure fund should be created to provide grants to those cities and states that establish eligible smart lane infrastructure sufficient to eliminate traffic.

Last, the recipients should re-invest all funds generated by these smart lanes back into hard infrastructure like roads and bridges, creating jobs, as well as into public transit, using the smart lanes to give buses faster travel times and further increase accessibility.

thread…into…

the fabric of street infrastructure

keep track of 了解...

one-way street 单行道

run the red light 闯红灯

自测REVIEW

1. A         (单行道)carrying car traffic off the Steel Bridge meets Interstate Avenue.

2. City planners need to start to              (把骑自行车的人考虑其中))the fabric of street infrastructure, so that sensors                (了解….的动态) cyclists and traffic signals allocate cycles to cyclists.

3. Next, a federal infrastructure fund should be created to              (提供资金) to those cities and states that establish eligible smart lane infrastructure sufficient to eliminate traffic.

答案KEYS

1. one-way street

2. thread bicyclists into;keep track of

3. provide grants
