The Red Dot Design Museum has opened a new building in the commercial podium of the tallest office building in Xiamen Jimei Xinglin Bay Business District. This site selection aims to combine the natural commercial attributes of the commercial podium with the museum space, revitalizing this long unused urban space. We ingeniously utilized the original facade display windows of the commercial podium as the museum's poster showcase windows, while setting up a series of red elements on the outdoor square and pedestrian bridge, such as advertising boxes, columns, handrails, canopies, and letter seats, as eye-catching guides to guide visitors to the museum entrance. These measures not only create outdoor public spaces for museums, but also add a bright red color to the city.
The design of the interior space of the museum also fully utilizes the advantages of commercial podiums. The atrium space, as the core of the entire museum, has become the visual focus by demolishing the original escalators and designing the iconic double spiral red staircase. These stairs not only serve as pathways for visitors to different floors, but also feature LED screens that display themed exhibits and video content, increasing interactivity and appeal. The space near the glass curtain wall on the second and third floors is designed as a viewing caf é and restaurant, creating a comfortable dining and viewing environment by adding functional bars, utilizing old lighting fixtures and furniture, and connecting to the lower level space through a distinct red spiral staircase.

In order to create a continuous roaming experience, we attempted to blur the boundaries between exhibition hall space and non exhibition hall space. The corridor space has been endowed with exhibition attributes, with various forms of display windows, openings, and hanging boards arranged, making it a free exhibition hall and bringing revenue generating business for merchants and brands to settle in the museum. In addition, we adopted an industrial design mindset and replaced traditional solid walls with prefabricated elements such as scaffolding, breaking the traditional box style enclosed exhibition hall model. This design not only meets the needs of flexible exhibition and exhibit transportation, but also saves time and costs, making the space quality more guaranteed.
