This is teacher Nelli, one of the superstar teachers here at 51 Talk.

同学们大家好！

我是Nelli老师，51Talk超级外教中的一员。

This week we will learn some expressions when you are at some places in town. Today let us listen to a dialogue between a waiter and a couple: Ralph and Anna.They are in the restaurant and they want to order food.

这周我们将学习一些城市生活用语。今天咱们来听一下服务员和一对夫妻之间的对话：拉尔夫和安娜。他们在餐厅里想要点餐。

WAITER: Hello, I’ll be your waiter today. Can I start you off with  something to drink?

服务员：你好，今天将由我来为你们服务。我能先给你们些饮品吗？

RALPH: Yes. I’ll have iced tea, please.

拉尔夫：好的。请给我些冰茶。

ANNA: And I’ll have lemonade.

安娜：我要柠檬汁。

WAITER: OK. Are you ready to  order, or do you need a few minutes?

服务员：好。你们现在可以点餐了吗？还是在等几分钟？

RALPH: I think we’re ready. I’ll have the tomato soup to start, and the  roast beef with mashed potatoes and peas.

拉尔夫：我觉得可以。我先来点西红柿汤开胃，然后再来点烤牛肉还有土豆豌豆泥。

WAITER: How do you want the beef — rare, medium, or well done?

服务员：你想要什么样的牛肉呢？生的，半熟还是全熟？

RALPH: Well done, please.

拉尔夫：全熟，谢谢。

ANNA: And I’ll just have the fish, with potatoes and a salad.

安娜：我就要点鱼和土豆还有沙拉。

短文讲解：

well-done

adjective meat that is well-done has been cooked thoroughly meat that is rare has only been cooked for a short time and is still red

Well-done 形容食物做到全熟；Rare 形容食物制作了简单处理，几乎是生的。

Are you ready to order, or do you need a few minutes?

The word “or” signals a choice here. Notice the rising intonation on order, and the falling intonation on minutes (the first choice is “Are you ready to order?” and the second choice is “Do you need a few minutes?”).

Are you ready to order, or do you need a few minutes? “or”在这里表示出选择性。留意下Order这个词用的是升调，Minutes这个词用的是降调。

I’ll just have the fish.

Anna says “just” here to mean that she does not want a starter.

I’ll just have the fish. 安娜说“just”表示她不想要任何开胃菜。
