As China seeks to attract international travelers post-pandemic, many of its efforts have focused on Huangshan, in the eastern Anhui Province, where the mountains are famed for the beauty of their steep, toothy faces. In 1990, Mount Huangshan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site; that brought sustainable growth, with a well-maintained network of walking paths and cable cars that disperse visitors among the area’s summits.
Now, one of the newest lines of the country’s fast-expanding bullet-train network makes it possible to travel from Shanghai to the gateway hub of Huangshan City, 28 miles south of the mountains, in two and a half hours (the trip used to require a flight or an overnight train). Moreover, China recently incorporated Anhui Province into its free transit-visa program, in which travelers from more than 50 countries, including the United States, who don’t have tourism visas can enter the country for up to 10 days if they’re passing through to somewhere else.
China also updated its all-in-one app Alipay last year to accept foreign cards and offer translation in 16 languages. In a first, the app has debuted an A.I.-generated travel companion for Huangshan, allowing users to bypass Alipay’s cluttered interface and directly ask for directions, hail taxis and source recommendations.
