Director of MBA & MSEM, Deans, Professors, the MBA & MSEM Office, Admissions, and most importantly, fellow Class of 2021,
Hello! My name is Cheng-Han Sher, you can call me Henry, and I am your 2019 IMBA classmate. What a privilege and honor to be standing here. I am so humbled.
When I received the admission acceptance letter from Guanghua, I was so thrilled. I was so excited, yet I was so nervous. All the discipline and persistence got me where I am today, only to push me even further to become more discipline and more persistence. When will this ever end?
My answer is no, it will never. We will become better versions of ourselves only when we choose to be.
I am not a XueBa 学霸, or in English – the straight A student, sorry, the straight A+ student; those who don’t know what runner-up means, because they are always 1st.
People tell me the moment you step into the Campus of Peking University, even the air is filled with 学霸. Take a deep breath – yes, that’s the smell. Remember it.
Knowing that coming to Guanghua, I will not be the smartest. And I will still not be the smartest after two years. But that is not what I am here for. I am here to be transformed. I am here for critical thinking.
Class of 2021, remember who you are, remember the sacrifices you have made this far:
You just left your job.
You are on scholarship, all the hard work you have put in.
You just arrived to Beijing, for the first time in your life.
You are working and starting your MBA at the same time.
You just had a newborn baby. Congratulations!
You see, we are all different, but we are all here together today because of our proven records. We are about to embark on a journey that will forever transform our lives over the next two years, or one, if you are already on a double degree. But please, pause, and think. All the sacrifices that you have made, because you want to be better, and you want to seek excellence.
I am so confident that after our two years here at Guanghua, we will be better critical thinkers. And when people look at us, they will never, ever look away. Because we represent Guanghua.
“Dreams without goals are just dreams, and they ultimately fuel disappointment.” These are the words from Denzel Washington. So Class of 2021, have dreams! Dream big! But remember to have goals, too.
I came to Guanghua with challenges in mind, because I am ready and excited to find my potential and seek answers, together with Guanghua.
And before I end my speech, I want to share them with you. Maybe, you already have them all. Maybe, they will re-inspire you. Here are my six (6) challenges, for all of us, in these coming two years:
1. I challenge you to accept and adapt change.
2. I challenge you to try something new.
3. I challenge you to dream big, with a clear goal.
4. I challenge you to fail, and then try again.
5. I challenge you to give back to the people around you, whenever you can.
6. I challenge you to lead change.
My name is Henry Sher and I am so excited to take on these challenges with you. Thank you!
