Like a landscape shining after heavy rain, it feels like real life with the sharpness, brightness and sensation turned right up.
This mind-bending Japanese animated film is very ingeniously scripted and works in multiple dimensions. Somehow, director Shinkai manages to combine romance, gender politics, a quest saga, a story of adolescent angst, and a time travel yarn while addressing post-Fukushima fears of disaster.
The beauty of the film lies in its ability to stir the imagination with eerie, resonant hand-drawn animation, like the opening sequence of streaking missiles penetrating the clouds and falling through the sky like fireworks.
Teen-age Mitsuha is bored with her life in rural Japan; Taki, a high school student in Tokyo, wants to be an architect. One morning, they wake up in each other’s bodies. They have to navigate their everyday lives without knowing where to find anything or who anybody is.
Meanwhile, a comet is passing over Japan, heralding a constellation of plot twists and allowing Shinkai to explore, in his understated way, the trauma of Japan’s 2011 tsunami and earthquake.
Body-swap movies always make for good comedy, but Your Name, takes the concept into more delicate, dreamlike territory.
“I wanted to create a tale of what happens to a boy and girl who are destined to meet. Neither one knows it yet, but somewhere out there is a person they are bound to care deeply about. I thought I might be able to encourage today’s young people if I could create a tale that evoked that sort of destiny.”
The hitch is the very syrupy musical score and the contrived sentimentality of the final section of the film in which the protagonists search for each other across time while also trying to avert the apocalypse.
One of the inspirations for the film was the earthquake in 2011. It was the largest in a thousand years, and there was something similar 1,000 years ago, which we all forgot about. But if you look closer there were warnings, like stone inscriptions in the cave in the film: don't live in this valley. But we forget those warnings, or dismiss them as something 'from the ancient times'.
There's a line in the film – "You never know when Tokyo will go" – that reveals the safety that can never be taken for granted in a place where the threat of natural disasters is constant.
“But even if that happens, even if we have to move somewhere else, we go on living. We meet someone special. That’s what I wanted Mitsuha to do. ‘Your Name’ may have struck a chord with Japanese viewers for that reason.”
正如Sight and Sound写的:
As the film swings back and forth between mountain shrines and Shinjuku Station, it eloquently and elegantly expresses not only teen confusion but also the tensions between old and new Japan.
"The character Mitsuha, where she shouts, 'Right, I hate this countryside, I'm going to Tokyo!' That's actually me at high school. I grew up in the countryside and wanted to go to Tokyo. I had Tokyo complex.
"I was dealing with forgetting and not forgetting, and how to pass things to the next generation," says Shinkai.
"The grandmother in this film, she's trying as hard as she can to give traditions on to her granddaughters, but inevitably you can't pass everything on. Nothing is perfect – there's fire, there's reluctance, there's this and that, things get lost."
The teenagers in the film are growing up in a changing world, and you wonder whether they'll pass on the few pieces of tradition they do know or rebel completely. That's a question left unanswered.
Typing thread is Musubi. Connecting people is Musubi. The flow of time is Musubi. These are all the god's power. So the braided cords that we make are the god's art and represent the flow of time itself. They converge and take shape. They twist, tangle, sometimes unravel, break, and then connect again. Musubi - knotting. That's time.
Whether it be water, rice or sake, when a person consumes something and it joins their soul, that’s Musubi. So today’s offering is an important custom that connects the god and people.
Treasure the experience. Dreams fade away after you wake up.
In exchange for returning to this world, you must leave behind what is most important to you.
I am always searching for something, for someone. This feeling has possessed me I think from that day...That day when the stars came falling. I was almost as if a scene from a dream. Nothing more, nothing less than a beautiful view.
There is no way we could meet. But one thing is certain. If we see each other, we will know.
I wanted to tell you. Wherever you are, I will search you.
Hey! Haven’t we met?
I thought so too!
Your name is…?
