Multistable systems owning multiple equilibrium positions are widely spread in the natural world and artificial devices, which are highly sensitive to disturbance, initial conditions, system parameters, etc. Recently, multistability has being exploited to improve the performance of structures, vibration control, and extractweak periodic signal from noise. For instance, multistable energy harvesters were found to improve energy harvesting performance from low-level and low-frequency environmental vibrations such as human activities. In addition, the instability of multistable systems can be used to improve the performance of sensitive and precise vibration control. Furthermore, stochastic resonance phenomenon is widely observed in multistable systems. Therefore, takinga physical perspective, using multistable systems to design numerical or experimental filters for improved signal processing may be interesting and meaningful. At the same time, the exploration of multistability in origami/flexible structures, soft actuators, metamaterials, and MEMS/NEMS devices will reveal new phenomena and mechanisms. Thus, the investigation and development of multistable systems play an important role in the technological advances. Therefore, this special issue is focused on the latest advances in Multistable Systems.
The scope of this issue includes but not limited to the following topics:
Fundamental theory of multistable systems
