Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed over the phone Tuesday to meet at the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan, later this month.

Trump said on Twitter he had a “very good” telephone conversation with Xi, and that the two will have “an extended meeting” next week at the G-20.

He said, “Our respective teams will begin talks prior to our meeting.”

Shortly after the tweet, China’s state broadcaster quoted Xi as saying he is willing to meet with Trump during the summit in Osaka to communicate on “fundamental issues” regarding the development of China-U.S. relations.

The two countries should solve trade and economic issues through fair conversation and take care of each other’s concerns, Xi told Trump, according to China Central Television.

The meeting in Japan, which hadn’t officially been scheduled, is expected to provide an opportunity for another ceasefire after the trade war escalated in recent months.

Chinese regulators called on the largest state-owned banks to provide financing to the country’s leading brokerages as part of efforts to calm market jitters caused by the government takeover of a private bank last month.

A meeting Tuesday involving the central bank, securities regulators and top banks and brokerages continued a series of steps to limit the fallout of last month’s seizure of Baoshang Bank.

The People’s Bank of China and the China Securities Regulatory Commission had previously promised bank financing support to nine leading brokerages and fund managers in return for their backing of smaller brokerages.

On Tuesday, the central bank and the commission summoned six big state-owned banks and some leading brokerage managers to discuss ways to address liquidity risks facing the non-banking financial sector.

China’s holdings of U.S. government debt fell for the second straight month in April, dropping to the lowest level in nearly two years, data released by the U.S. Treasury Department on Monday show.

The hoard slid by $7.5 billion to $1.113 trillion.

China’s holdings are now the lowest since May 2017.

China is the biggest foreign holder of U.S. government bonds, known as Treasurys, and global markets have become increasingly sensitive to the monthly changes since trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies flared up last year and ratcheted up in early May.

The concern is that any large-scale selling of U.S. government bonds by China would send prices tumbling, although it could reduce the value of China’s remaining holdings.

That could result in yield on the debt rising, making it more expensive for the government to borrow.

But many economists doubt that China would dump U.S. government debt.

China’s central bank is selling more yuan-denominated bills in Hong Kong, which should absorb yuan funds in the offshore market and so make it harder to short the struggling currency.

The yuan has fallen sharply against the dollar since April and is now hovering close to the key psychological barrier of 7 yuan per dollar.

The People’s Bank of China said Wednesday it will sell 30 billion yuan worth of bills in Hong Kong on June 26.

China Railway Corp. has renamed itself China State Railway Group and adopted a more market-oriented corporate structure, the company said on Tuesday.

The revamp brings the company into line with a national push for reform of China's state-owned enterprises.

The new group will have a board of directors and a management team but no shareholder meetings.

The Chinese government will remain the company’s sole shareholder, with the Ministry of Finance performing investor duties at the company on behalf of the State Council.

Chinese app maker ByteDance now has over 1 billion monthly active users across its apps, the company announced earlier this week.

ByteDance owns popular news aggregator Jinri Toutiao and short video app TikTok, which is known in China as Douyin.

With a valuation of $75 billion, ByteDance is the world’s most valuable “unicorn” — a term meaning a startup worth more than $1 billion.
