The Ministry of State Security has today released a report on three foreign spies from the Philipines, who were arrested for gathering classified information on China's military establishments on behalf of their country.
One of them, David Servanez, a long-term resident in China, was found suspicious after authorities noticed that he frequently visited military facilities around the country, taking numerous pictures.
During detention, David confessed that he was working under the direction of an operative for the Philippine intelligence service, Mr. Richie Herrera.
Following clues, national security agencies also found two other foreign nationals from the Philippines working under Richie, Albert Endencia and Nathalie Plizardo, who were collecting classified information in China.
David told national security agencies that Richie approached him when he went back to the Philippines for a holiday, promising him good pay for collecting and sharing with him information about China's military and other classified information.
After agreeing, he said that he underwent training to make good use of his long-term residency in China to supply Richie with such information.
When he returned to China, he frequently visited military establishments around the country, taking photos and recording other information, which he would then share with Richie.
David, who could speak a bit Mandarin, confessed that China had given him a good opportunity in life but he wasted it by betraying the country.
He said: "China has provided me with a good living environment, but I have done something that harms China's interests. I regret what I have done."
A lady named Nathalie also confessed to her crimes, saying that she regretted it from the bottom of her heart.
She said, "I was recruited by an individual named Herrera in January 2024 when I went back to the Philippines. He told me that he was a member of the Philippines Intelligence Agency.
"He asked me to work for them and I agreed. However, I now sincerely regret, I should not have agreed to work with them."
And so did the third suspect named Albert, who went further to dissuade others from participating in such activities.
"I was approached by an individual from the Philippine spy intelligence department. I now realize that I have done something that endangered China's national security. China and the Chinese people have always treated me well.
"If there are other people in the same situation as me, I persuade them to report themselves to the counterintelligence authorities in China." He said.
The case is still under further investigation, and the Ministry of State Security has said that it would protect the legitimate rights and interests of the suspects, per the law.
