最近在读葛传槼老师的一本小书《向学习英语者讲话》(Hints for learners of English)。葛老在书中解答了在 英语学习过程中大家最关心的各个问题：英语学习者到底应该阅读什么读物？不该读什么？怎样才能读得精细？为什么要朗读？怎么模仿？如何提高写作？... 薄薄的一本书，37篇小文章，全是精华。

其中有一篇谈论如何提高写作的文章——《 比扩大词汇量更重要的事 》(Something more important than enlarging one's vocabulary)，文中有这样一段话，解答了诸多学生的困惑：

“怎样扩大我的词汇量”——这是我被问过的最普遍的问题之一。的确，一般中国的英语学习者的词汇量非常有限，可是我认为对于他有限的词汇量，有比使它增加更为重要的事要做。他还得识更多的词才能精通英语。同样，他只有对自身词汇量中的大多数词获得进一步的了解，才能精通英语。

因为他会在自己并不真正懂得一个词的时候以为懂得了它。我所说的懂得一个词，是指懂得它真正的唯一意义或各个意义，而不是指一个或多个我们所谓的它的汉语对应语。

我们易于忽略普通词。除了误用和误解外，我们易于忽略它们的各种意义，或者可以说各种合于习语的用法。

葛老的方法与「 小词妙用」专栏的理念不谋而合： 如果你 想提高写作，与其 盲目使用所谓的「 高级词 汇」，不如 把你认识的词都吃透 ，精准贴切地把 它的各种 词性、各个含义 都用上，这能达到事半功倍的效果。

葛老在后面几篇文章进一步地阐述了这一理念，感兴趣的同学可以买一本《像学习英语者讲话》来读一读。《上海译文出版社》出的这一版是中英对照版，读起来很轻松，半个小时就能读完大师毕生总结的经验。

如果书里的方法和你平时训练的方法相一致，那么，你可以走得更坚定，如果不一致，可以多加对比，摸索出最适合自己的方法。

带着这样的学习理念，我们今天接着来讲「小词妙用」专栏第10期的内容。今天的主角是小词drain。

No.1

drain (v.)

drain 既可作名词，也可作动词。 作名词指「下水道」，作动词的基本含义是「排空，排干」，相当于gradually empty sth。

举一个美剧《摩登家庭》中的例子： You didn't drain the water yet, did you ?

drain 由其本义，引申出抽象意义上 「耗尽，耗光」 的意思，有以下几个具体的用法，我们来逐个讲解：

1. 表示 「使筋疲力尽」 ( to make someone feel very tired and without any energy) ，后面直接跟人： drain sb ，相当于make sb very tired, exhaust sb。 举几个例子：

这场长途旅行使我精疲力尽。

The long trip completely drained me.

整天和小孩打交道真是让人疲惫不堪。

Working with children all day really drains you.

我们来造个句 ：

工作计划太多只会榨干你，导致你的注意力很难集中。

An overloaded schedule can drain you so much that you become unfocused.

总结：exhaust sb, make sb very tired → drain sb

3.表示 「耗尽」 精力 (If energy drains or is drained from you, you lose all energy and become very tired) 。比如：

焦虑会耗尽你的精力。
Anxiety drains your energy.

3.表示 「耗尽」 金钱 (to use too much of something, especially money, so that there is not enough left) 。比如：

我母亲的住院开销把我的收入渐渐耗光了。
My mother 's hospital expenses were slowly draining my income.

我们在「看电影学英语」专栏里讲过的电影 《婚姻故事》 中有这样一句话：

And in doing so, you're draining money from your kid's education.

最近很火的美剧《无所作为》(The Undoing)里也出现了这个词：

He did drain our bank account some.

再比如《华盛顿邮报》一篇关于疫情下各行各业状况的文章有这样一句话：

Restaurants and local retailers are draining whatever cash reserves are left—with many owners wondering if the next week might be their last.

总结：use up money→ drain money

drain (v.) 相关短语

我们接着来看一些与 drain 相关的动词短语。

✏️ drain sb of sth

这个短语表示「耗尽某人的...」 。意思近似于 use up sth 。

举几个例子：

War drains a natio n of it s youth and its wealth.

战争会耗尽一个国家的青年群体和财富。

The company has been drained of its cleverest men.

该公司的最优秀人才都流失了。

Eleanor has such a pessimistic attitude that being around her just drains

me of energy.

埃莉诺态度消极，在她身边就耗尽了我的精力。

✏️  sth drains away

本来是指水「流走，流出...」，转而喻指 某种情绪或状态「逐渐平息，慢慢消失」。比如：

Anger drains away. 愤怒逐渐平息。

Confidence drains away. 自信渐渐消失。

我们再来看两个外刊中的例子：

据Reuters报导， 英国数一数二的连锁酒吧品牌Wetherspoon（威瑟斯本），由于疫情导致的“封城”，损失惨重，文章标题是这样写的：

Wetherspoon profits drain away to £34m loss after ‘erratic’ lockdown.

混乱的封锁政策导致威瑟斯本利润暴跌，亏损高达三千四百万英镑。

Bloomberg一篇报道描写了印度贫民在疫情下的艰难生活，其中有这么一句话：

Nafisa watched her baby's life drain away . She and her husband struggle to make even 1 rupee(1 cent) a day from their tailoring business after India went into a Covid-19 lockdown in March.

娜菲莎(Nafisa)无奈地看着孩子的生命在眼前消逝。自三月以来，印度为遏制新冠疫情的蔓延实行了“封城”。受此影响，娜菲莎和丈夫的裁缝生意一落千丈，一天甚至连1卢比（折合美元为1美分）都挣不到。

我们可以把 sb's life d rain away 这个表达记下来，用来表 示因病去世。

No.2

drain (n)

1. drain 作名词时，其原义为 「 下水道；排水管」 。

比 如： I think the kitchen drain is blocked. 我觉得厨房的排水管堵了。

✏️  go down the drain

这是一个特别有画面感的表达，字面义是「...到下水道去了」，喻指 「前功尽弃；泡汤；白白浪费掉」 。英文释义为： to fail; to be ruined or destroyed; to be squandered or wastefully discarded. 我们来看一些例子：

《金融时报》一篇关于日本福岛核污水排放问题的文章，其中有这么一句话：

"We realise the handling of this water is a pressing and important national problem, but if this water is released into the ocean, it will have a severe impact and all the effort of fishermen (to recover from the Fukushima disaster) will go down the drain ."

“我们知道核污水的处理十分紧急，是事关全国的大事。但如果把污水排进海洋，将会产生严重影响，渔民们的多年努力（从福岛核电泄露事件的影响中恢复）也将付诸东流”。

我们可以从这句话里提炼出一个句型： All the effort of sb goes down the drain. 表示「某人前功尽弃，某人所有的努力都白费了」。

《经济学人》一篇比较买房和租房的优劣的文章也用到了这个词：

The question hardly seems worth asking. Is it a better deal to rent a house or to buy one? Buying a house is a wise investment for the future, the argument goes, whereas renting one amounts to little more than throwing money down the drain.

这个问题似乎不值一问。买房或租房，哪个更划算？有观点认为，买房是对未来的明智投资之选，而租房则等同于钱打水漂。

throw money down the drain 太形象了，和中文里的「钱打水漂了」有异曲同工之妙。

总结：go down the strain → to be wasted / spoiled

2. drain 作名词时，还可引申为抽象意义上的 「消耗；耗费；流失」 。惯用搭配为： be a drain on sb/sth 。

表示 「对...的 消耗；...方面的耗费」 。我们来看2个例子：

Interns aren't supposed to be a drain on time, energy or resources.

实习生不应该成为雇主时间、精力或者资源上的负担。

Military spending is a huge drain on the country's resources.

军费开支是对国家资源的巨大耗费。

Fraud trials are often complex and have become an expensive drain on the public purse.

诈骗案通常错综复杂，会给公共资金造成巨大损失。

美剧《无耻之徒》里也出现过这个词：

(It is) nothing respectable about being a drain on the system.

再举个例子，雅思作文考试经常会考到要不要保护老建筑，当阐述反对一方的观点时，我们就可以这么说：
Restoring old buildings is a drain on taxpayers' money .

✏️ brain drain

这是一个固定词组，表示 「人才流失 」。

这是个外刊高频短语。比如，ABC一篇文章介绍新冠疫情对澳大利亚人才外流的影响，其标题为：

COVID-19 pandemic offers 'single greatest opportunity' to reverse Australia's brain drain . But there are catches.

新冠疫情是澳大利亚扭转人才流失的最好机会。但也存在不利因素。

再比如，今年9月，学术期刊《自然》一篇文章谈到美国政府各种骚操作可能会导致中国来的人才流失，文章标题是这样写的：

Us political crackdown spurs fears Chinese brain drain .

drained (adj.)

drained 为形容词，表示「精疲力竭；无精打采」(very tired and without energy)。比如：
Suddenly, she felt totally drained. 她突然感觉筋疲力尽。

近义词还有tired, exhausted, fatigued,  jaded, weary, worn out

draining 则表示「令人精疲力竭的」的意思，相当于very tiring。

emotionally draining 是一个很常见的搭配，可以用来表示我们平时说的「心力交瘁」。举个例子：

Days in the ICU are physically and emotionally draining .

再比如《纽约时报》采访到的一个失业者这样说道：

It’s been the most emotionally draining , scariest time in my life by far.”

这是我人生中最心力交瘁、最可怕的日子。
