2016年，BBC邀请到来自世界各地36个国家的177位影评人投票选出了“21世纪最伟大电影”。这份榜单兼顾了艺术与商业，位列榜单第一位的是大卫·林奇导演的“烧脑”影片《穆赫兰道》。
前十名当中，亚洲电影占据四席，华语电影占据两席，分别是第二名的《花样年华》，第八名的《一 一》。
前一百名中，有五部华语作品榜上有名。其中王家卫执导的《花样年华》位列第二；杨昌德的经典作品《一一》位列第八；其余上榜的华语作品还包括李安的《卧虎藏龙》、《断背山》，侯孝贤的《刺客聂隐娘》。
本榜单中，2012年可谓是电影大热的一年，共有10部影片入选。值得一提的是，一些大家耳熟能详的影片并未入选，比如《哈利波特》系列、《指环王》系列、《加勒比海盗》系列等等。
