Do young people who commit serious crimes should be punished in the same way as adults? To what extent do you agree or disagree?

People claim that juvenile delinquency should be punished as harsh as adult in order to prevent crime. I reckon that adolescents who commit felony crimes deserve a tough punishment, but should be distinguished from adults.
Some severe penalty imposed on young people who commit serious crimes does make sense. Teenagers aged nearly 20 years old have already developed a mature personality, which means that they know clearly the consequence of their bad behavior and should certainly be to blame.Furthermore, the murderous character defects have been moulded and can hardly be improved by education, so only the heavy punishment the same as adults can deter them from crime.
However, the government should be soft on petty crime committed by teenagers for the purpose of self defense .For instance, a teenager under 14 years old killing his father who tortured him for a long time is supposed to be tolerant and on no account should serve prison sentence. Additionally, long-term prison experience has an adverse effect on the youth to reintegrate into society and they can easily imitate anti-society behavior from other adult inmates. Last but not the least, adolescents who are sentenced in the same way as adults may be discriminated by their peers after free from prison, which would makes them develop potential psychological problems.
In conclusion, different kinds of juvenile delinquency should be treated in different ways, whether young people committing serious crimes are forced to burden the duty the same as adults depends on specific condition.

In conclusion, different kinds of juvenile delinquency should be treated in different ways, and whether young people committing serious crimes are forced to burden the duty (should be punished) the same way as adults depends on specific conditions.

这篇文章可以写成同意或者反对题目观点。如果同意青少年应该与成年人接受相同的刑罚，可以提出下面的观点：
（1）大部分青少年能够分清对与错，也能够明白他们的行为所带来的后果。因此，他们应该和成年人一样，为自己的行为负责。
（2）对于犯有严重罪行的青少年（比如谋杀，虐待），如果对他们量刑过轻，他们回归社会后很可能还会重犯，对社会造成危害。
（3）同时，不管是青少年还是成年人犯罪，受害者受到的伤害都是一样的。如果青少年仅仅因为年龄就能减免刑罚，这会对受害者的感情会造成伤害。
如果认为青少年应该与成年人区别对待，可以提出下面的观点：
（1）青少年在监狱里容易受到其他罪犯的影响，可能会变得更加堕落，监狱起不到教育作用。部分青少年还可能在狱中被其他人欺凌。
（2）监狱经历会对青少年的人生造成污点，影响他们的前途。
下面是我写的一个版本，我的观点是同意青少年与成年人应该受到相同惩罚：

The issue whether minors who commit serious crimes should be punished in the same way as adults has provoked public debate. In my view, punishments should be measured equally between young and adult offenders for the sake of justice, crime deterrence and their victims’ sentiments.
Equal punishments to young and adult offenders are justifiable. Many young people are mature enough to distinguish right from wrong and they know what consequences their actions will lead to. Therefore, they should be held accountable for their violent behavior by receiving the full force of the law. It seems manifestly unfair that if an adult and an adolescent commit a crime, then the younger gets more lenient punishments despite them both being guilty of the same crime.
The deterrence of crime should also be considered. The prospect of incarceration will deter many youngsters from committing a felony in the first place; light sentences, on the other hand, could be seen by troublesome teenagers as license to do as they please. In addition, teenage delinquents with aggressive tendencies may possibly reoffend after they are released from juvenile detention centers. Only harsh punishments such as long prison terms can ensure the safety of other citizens.
Moreover, treating juvenile and adult criminals differently may hurt victims’ feelings. The trauma and anguish caused by kidnapping and sexual abuse could persist for years. Giving young offenders light sentences may be construed by their victims as unjust, rubbing salt into their wounds.
To sum up, punishments should be imposed equally on young and adult offenders. This is the best way to decrease juvenile delinquency and ensure that justice is done.
