In collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, the L’Institut Français de Pékin will host a special screening of “Selma” at 15:30 on Sunday March 20.
Released in 2014, the film was directed by African American film director Ava DuVernay, who was the first black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and a Golden Globe Award for Best Director.
“Selma” is a powerful true story that chronicles the historical fight in 1965 led by Dr. Martin Luther King to secure equal voting rights for all citizens. This dangerous and tumultuous campaign concluded in the Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, directly leading to America's voting rights act. It was one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement.
Following the film, there will be a panel discussion with representatives from the African American Alliance at the U.S. Embassy.
