China’s industrial companies’ profits dropped in April following a surge in the previous month, official data showed Monday, adding to concerns over the recovery of the country’s economic growth.

Profits of industrial enterprises dropped 3.7 percent year-on-year in April, significantly down from a 13.9 percent increase in March.

The drop was partly due to the timing of the value-added tax cut at the start of April, which prompted firms to shift purchases earlier to March, said Zhu Hong, a senior statistician at the National Bureau of Statistics.

Zhu said the drop was also caused by a high base of comparison last year.

China’s major economic indicators for investment, retail and industrial output in April also showed growth falling from multi-month highs in March.

China’s economy is not based on “state monopoly capitalism,” the country’s top banking regulator said Saturday, adding the country won’t stop the momentum of opening up its financial industry.

The state sector now contributes less than 40 percent of China’s GDP, and it’s groundless to insist that the rapidly growing economy is a result of following a “state monopoly capitalism” model, China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission head Guo Shuqing said in a statement read by one of his representatives at a forum in Beijing.

The statement said private capital and foreign investment can now enter almost any business area, and many state-owned companies have added private stakeholders and are competing with each other.

He added China's ongoing opening up of the financial sector will never stop, let alone turn back.

His remarks come after complaints by many nations, including the U.S., that China unfairly supports state-owned companies to the detriment of private rivals in a number of key sectors, such as energy and telecommunications.

China maintains a blacklist of 48 sectors where foreign investment is restricted, including entertainment, internet publications and law firms.

Leading Chinese chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, or SMIC, has notified the New York Stock Exchange that it plans to voluntarily delist its American depositary shares, or ADSs.

SMIC cited “a number of considerations,” including the limited trading volume of its ADSs relative to its worldwide trading volume.

It also attributed the move to significant administrative burdens and costs of maintaining the listing and registration, as well as complying with periodic reporting and related obligations.

The board has approved the delisting and deregistration.

SMIC’s last trading day on the exchange will be in mid-June.

The company debuted in Hong Kong and New York in 2004.

China’s financial regulators have taken control of a small private bank, as part of authorities’ efforts to break up fallen tycoon Xiao Jianhua’s business empire and contain financial risks.

The People’s Bank of China and the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission announced Friday that they would take over the operations of Baoshang Bank for a year.

Two Chinese-American researchers sacked from Emory University in the U.S. for allegedly failing to fully reveal their Chinese links said they are weighing the option of suing.

Last week, the Atlanta-based University announced two faculty members had been dismissed, because they had, quote, “failed to fully disclose foreign sources of research funding and the extent of their work for research institutions and universities in China.”

The university said the decision was made based on an investigation after an inquiry by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
