今天来谈谈香的坏处。这里的香不是“春风花草香”里的植物之香，亦不是“赌书消得泼茶香”中的雅香，更不是屈夫子诗句里满满的中药香，而是现代商业带来的各种含香消费品。香料的流行始于古埃及的贵族，他们非常喜欢麝香和其他来自珍稀动植物的昂贵且难求的原料。19世纪晚期开始，人们开始利用现代化工技术合成多样且低成本的合成香料，从蜡烛到洗发水，甚至是厨房和厕所都慢慢散发出柠檬和松香的味道，人类从来没有暴露在如此多的人工芳香化学物之中。问题在于没有人知道这些含香产品是否安全，甚至很难知道它们的成分，在大多数国家厂家香料成分无需声明。越来越多的人表示无孔不入的人工香味已经严重地影响了他们的健康，然而矛盾在于嗅觉是无法进行盲法实验对比，因此很难排除心理因素。
