How do you recall the past?
One can consciously search for the roots of events and rationally organize them into a clear trajectory, writing a piece of history. One might also accidentally encounter things, which take one back with one’s senses to that place and time in memory, awakening many stories. This exhibition exists somewhere in between, in search of meaningful objects through various threads of the queer movement.

Starting from August 4th, “In Search of Lost Time: Queer Memories from Beijing” holds together objects from the queer community in the same space, inviting you to experience possibilities of queer history and stories. We borrowed the name of a book that battles against oblivion, In Search of Lost Time by the late-nineteenth-century French writer Marcel Proust. The worries about the constant passing and erosion of things haunt us, while precious memories hide away from the conscious efforts to retrieve. The absenting forces of censorship and passing time, as well as the materiality of queer lives and queer stories, remind us of the urgency to preserve and archive queer history. The work, however, goes away beyond the capability of one or several individuals. As our first attempt, this exhibition intends to investigate and exhibit the presence and absence of queer materials. We mean to modestly initiate the discussion of queer history and call forth efforts from different sides to archive queerness in Beijing.

The exhibition draws from nine different LGBTQI organizations in Beijing and four artists. There are more than 90 objects that carry different stories from the Beijing queer community for the past ten years. It includes not only pictorial materials but also paraphernalias and ephemera, such as posters, photographs, T-shirts, and magazines. Some objects are accompanied with short pieces of oral history narrated by the donors of the objects. There are also short films produced by the LGBTQI community. However, the exhibition remains an incomplete portray of history, since some of the memories and objects are already lost and cannot be retrieved.
