As many of you guys may have
noticed, foreigners, doesn’t matter white, black or brown, often smell pretty
bad. There are all kinds of rumors why East Asians, namely Chinese, Koreans and
Japanese, don’t have as much body odor as people from other parts of the world
may have.
Like most mysterious
questions, the actual answer lies in SCIENCE.
So today, I’m going to use science
to break it down for you guys why most foreigners are more likely to stink(有臭味)
than East Asians(东亚人,中日韩等).
洗漱用品 Bathroom amenities/Washing
supplies:
洗发水 Shampoo
护发素 Conditioner
沐浴液 Body shampoo
洗面奶 Face cleanser/Face

香皂 Soap
护肤霜 Moisturizer/Cream
...
除臭剂 Deodorant
臭味:Odor、Stench、Stink
香味:Aroma、Fragrance
Where does
the odor come from?
We have two primary types of
sweat
glands(汗腺)
:
eccrine (外泌汗腺/小汗腺)
apocrine (顶泌汗腺/大汗腺)
Eccrine sweat glands are small and
found almost everywhere on our body.
They go directly from underneath
your skin to your skin’s surface.
They secrete(分泌) a mixture of
water and salt, which is used to cool down our body.
The apocrine sweat glands are
actually the ones that cause body odor.
They are much larger and are only
found in certain areas of the body, primarily your armpits(腋下) and pubic
region(阴部).
And they secrete mainly
proteins(蛋白质), lipids(脂类), and steroids(固醇).
By itself, the sweat does
not smell.
However, it IS a
delicious meal for the bacteria(细菌) that live on our skin.
Bacteria eat this sweat,
and then their waste products are what smell.
So, body odor essentially
comes from bacteria poop(便便).
What makes us East Asians have
less body odor?
ABCC11
Gene
This gene has two
variations:
allele A and allele G
(allele: 等位基因)
People born with allele G have
more active apocrine sweat glands,
whereas people born with allele A
have fewer active apocrine sweat glands.
So genetically speaking,
this variation within the ABCC11 gene is what cause people to have different
amount of body odor.
